Reflection on the murder of trans Filipina Jennifer Laude by a US Marine

 

October 17 was the Global Day of Action for Jennifer Laude, a Filipina who was murdered by visiting U.S. military forces in the Philippines.

Jennifer was a 26-year-old transgender woman killed by U.S. Marine, Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton on October 11 in Olongapo City. Mainstream media outlets immediately pulled out old slurs to create sensationalist headlines dehumanizing and blaming Jennifer for her own death. The exhibition of transmisogyny is easily captured in the vault of any internet news search on Jennifer’s death. 

No Surprise, New PETA Ad Objectifies Women

PETA’s at it again with another ad that may trigger survivors of sexual violence.  (Please take that into consideration should you decide to watch the video at the link.)

The commercial shows an injured young woman, without pants, carrying home groceries.  The narrator then introduces the young woman as Jessica and says, “She suffers from ‘BWVAKTBOOM,’ ‘Boyfriend Went Vegan and Knocked the Bottom Out of Me,’ a painful condition that occurs when boyfriends go vegan and can suddenly bring it like a tantric porn star.”

Then, we see Jessica’s lover ask if she is alright while covering a hole in the bedroom drywall with spackle.

What an awakening for this generation after years of being silenced! After about one month, cities nationally and internationally have heeded the call: Americans will no longer be bystanders in this nation as the economic crisis demands that the government be accountable to citizens and not corporations.

As an organizer myself in the NYC area, it’s been amazing to witness the growth of our local movement. Groups are stepping up and forming demands. Long-time activists in the New York City area are excited to welcome a movement whose aim is to address the needs of their communities on a local and global scale.

Critique of SlutWalk on Behalf of All Women of Color Communities

Black Women’s Blueprint published an open letter via Facebook to organizers of SlutWalk Toronto, an annual demonstration to assert safe spaces and consent.  The concerns voiced by Black Women’s Blueprint regarding the march were those already on the minds of many: why is there a lack of representation and analysis on the varied contexts survivors of color face in the SlutWalk venue?

Specifically, Black Women’s Blueprint asks SlutWalk to:

include the experiences of Black women, and the roles they have played in the women’s movement, within the SlutWalk analysis include the histories and experiences of all women of color re-brand SlutWalk acknowledge the historical significance of the word “rape” as a racist/sexist structure to organize beyond an annual demonstration to end ...
