House Health Care Bill Specifics

Hey Feministing Community,

We’re working on a chart comparing the Senate and House bills and what they will mean for health reform. The only problem is, specifics.

In the House Bill, they say annual and lifetime limits will be prohibited, but I can’t find information anywhere that says WHEN this will go into affect for annual limits.

Anyone know the answer? With a link to a resource?

Thanks!

Alternative Birthing Options in Health Care Reform

Hey Feministing Community!

I’m trying to find some information on how midwifery and other alternative birthing options are treated in all the health care reform bills, but finding comparisons about this topic is proving difficult.

Anyone know of any resources that could be useful?

Thanks!

What Women Want in Health Care Reform, vs. What Women Get with Health Reform

The folks at Raising Women’s Voices have put together a wonderful fact sheet about what women’s issues are at stake with health care reform. It outlines specifics about what women want in health care, and whether or not the bills in the House and Senate will help us or hurt us.

Check it out!

It’s under "Our Publications" in the Resources tab on our webpage raisingwomensvoices.net

Pay Inequity Continues for Female CEOs

Crossposted to FeministLookingGlass.com

This isn’t a surprising revelation, but it’s an important one: According to a corporate research firm, female CEOs earned only 58% of what male CEOs earned in 2008– and their pay was slashed 3 times the amount of male CEO pay cuts . Additionally, men CEOs earned 3.5 times more in bonuses than women CEOs. On paper, this pay discrepancy may not have been obvious, because the median base salary was higher for women than for men. But as Reuters explains :

Top female chief executives’ median base salary was $40,000 higher than that for male CEOs, but men’s’ discretionary bonuses were more than 3.5 times larger than those given to females, and men’s perquisite ...

Jon Corzine’s Pro-Woman Campaign Approach

Since moving to New York City, I’ve caught quite a few TV ads for both Jon Corzine and Chris Christie’s campaigns in the NJ gubernatorial race. Jon Corzine began a steep uphill battle, due to NJ’s poor economic situation, as well as the July 2009 corruption scandal involving 40-something NJ officials, rabbis, and possible organ trafficking. But what struck me was the direction and focus of his current campaign ads. At least half of what I’ve seen targets women’s issues and GOP candidate Christie’s reluctance to protect women’s health.

I stumbled upon this article from The Nation, which posits that Corzine’s campaign has become revitalized due to his decision to market to the left– not paint himself as a moderate:

What did Corzine ...

Stalking Victims and Victim Blaming: Tracee Hamilton and Erin Andrews

Crossposted to FeministLookingGlass.com

Tracee Hamilton, a new sports columnist for the Washington Post, wrote a column today , following up on the Erin Andrews case, discussing stalking and victim-blaming. It’s a rather personal column, as she opens up about a stalker who followed her for years, instilling terror and helplessness in her for more years to follow. It’s a chilling read, but it’s relevant to the Erin Andrews case, and to many women’s lives.

Hamilton was stalked for years by a man she met in school; he sent her explicit and threatening letters, made frequent silent telephone calls, and stood outside her window all night. And on top of it, school administrators and even a mental health professional blamed her for ...

Call to Action!

Hey Feministing Community!

(Bear with me for the informational part of this post… what you can do to help will come at the end.)

I’m sure a lot of you already know about Raising Women’s Voices, a small non-profit that works to get quality and affordable healthcare for all women and our families. We are based in NYC but have regional coordinators across the country and have held a number of speak-outs, having women with poor (or no) insurance share their stories.

We have all heard stories of women without insurance who suddenly get sick or injured and run up thousands of dollars in debt, or women who cannot get covered for the type of birth they would prefer to have, or women ...

Please: No More Abstinence-only Education!

When I was 17 and in my senior year, my Texas high school held a mandatory assembly featuring some speaker who was an Abstinence Life Coach. The man was 35, a proud virgin, and pretty good at fear-mongering. He showed graphic STD slideshows, made a lot of awkward jokes, and waxed poetic about ‘true love.’ He also told a lot of tales about his ‘friends’ who died after having sex, and made us write “oaths” to remain virgins, which he then collected. He wanted everyone to remain “pure” until marriage. I can remember sitting in between two of my friends who were gay, and one of them wrote the following across his oath:  ”I can’t get married, you ...
