Annoyingly Sexist Old Spice Ad

I just submitted this to Sociological Images, but in case it doesn’t get posted I thought I’d share my annoyance with the feministing crowd.

What the hell? There’s a whole slew of problems here. Firstly, what’s wrong with "smellling like a woman"? Secondly, what does "smelling like a woman" even mean ? I assume it means perfumey/flowery, smells typically associated with women’s bath products, which is still ridiculous. What about the men who want to smell like that? I’m sure there’s loads of guys who enjoy the smell and/or feel of women’s bath products over those marketed to men, but according to Old Spice that’s a huge no-no. Because being a man means not touching any of that girly shit with a ten foot pole, right?

Assumptions about role models

I’ve noticed that many people I come across have a hard time seeing a teenage girl with male role models as legitimate. I stopped being open about my admiration of a male artist because of the reactions I got — "Because he’s so cute, right?" "Aww, so you have a little crush on him?" etc. I’d thought this experience was behind me until a few days ago.

I posted on Facebook a link to something written by Carl Sagan. A friend of my dad’s (who always butts in on anything vaguely controversial with his poorly spelled/grammatically incorrect opinion) commented, expressing his disagreement with the subject matter. I made a respectful counter-argument, and we actually had a fairly painless exchange for a ...

Cracked.com Points Out Sexism in ‘Chick Flicks.’

So, Cracked.com doesn’t always employ the classiest of humor, but it’s definitely not the most offensive site out there. That said, I was (pleasantly) surprised to see an article on their front page this morning called, “7 Popular ‘Chick Flicks’ That Secretly Hate Women.”

From the introduction to the article: “Hollywood filmmakers like their women like they like their coffee: shrill, stupid and submissive. And usually not black.

As evidence, all you need to do is look at the “romantic” movies which are targeted toward women, yet somehow embrace every negative assumption about females that males have ever dreamed up.”

The article isn’t perfect, obviously (“tranny” is used as an insult at the end; not a fan.) but overall I think it’s ...

The Normal Breast Gallery

Normal Breasts Gallery (NSFW): http://www.007b.com/breast_gallery.php

Apologies if this has been posted here before. I remember finding this website a couple of years ago and it made me very happy and even lessened some insecurities I had at the time about my breasts. The gallery is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: photographs of real women’s breasts of all different sizes and looks, all presented as absolutely normal, healthy, and beautiful. I think it’s a great resource for everybody, but especially for preteens/teenagers, potentially to help girls overcome insecurities about their breasts and realize that there is no single definition of “normal”; or to show boys that images of breasts in the media and in pornography are often not very ...

New Beds Made Especially For Men

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204488304574429070364650290.html?mod=yhoofront

What exactly makes this bed “for men”? According to the article: “The bed frames feature built-in TVs, iPod docking stations, wine coolers, safes and other guy-friendly gadgetry.” …Because for it to be woman-friendly, it would have to be pink and not as functional as the men’s version, right?

Another gem, regarding one of the bed’s built-in safes: ‘”A lot of our male customers want to keep a gun close to them at night, so now they have the option to have a safe in the bed,” says Maya Ben, Hollandia International’s vice president of operations. “It gives them peace of mind.”‘

A charming testimonial: “Mr. Shapiro admits his wife was less than enthusiastic when he picked the bed out six months ...

An Awesome Parenting Resource

Months ago, I came across a web site called India Parenting. I bookmarked it because for whatever reason, I’m really into reading parenting websites, even though I’m not a parent myself. It wasn’t until recently that I actually got around to reading it, and lo and behold, it’s super feminist-friendly.

I often see parents here on Feministing as well as on other websites asking about how to raise their children to be open-minded and/or feminists. It’s a difficult question to answer in a comment box, but this website touches on a lot of feminist issues. On their general "Raising Children" page (http://www.indiaparenting.com/raisingchild/index.shtml), there are articles about how to discourage prejudice in your child and encourage tolerance, why it’s important to be ...

‘Taking Woodstock’ is an LGBT-Friendly Film

After much anticipation, I finally got to see the movie ‘Taking Woodstock’ last weekend. I was very excited about the film (Demetri Martin and Emile Hirsch and Woodstock?! Swoon!) but if we’re honest, I expected a lot of cheesiness and overuse of the word "groovy." I expected to enjoy it a lot, but I didn’t expect it to be what one would call a well-made film.

I could go on and on about the quality of the production (better than expected!) but here I want to say that I was very pleasantly surprised at how LGBT-friendly it was.

-WARNING: SPOILERS-

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the (based-on-a-true) story, it follows Elliot (Demetri Martin), a young man who’s reluctantly agreed ...

Best of Craigslist: Planned Parenthood Protestors

Not sure whether this actually happened, but I still got a kick out of it.

Seems like a satisfying alternative to when you just want to throw eggs at anti-choicers and their disgusting signs. Just come home and snark on them on the internets!
