(Rich, White) Women and Children First!

When I saw the cover of a homeschooling (Christian) catalog, I knew I was in for a doozy. The cover features two cute white children on the deck of the Titanic with the words “Women and Children First!” above them.

As someone who has seen the Titanic movie more than 3 times in the movie theater, and was able to visit the way cool Discovery Channel Titanic exhibit, I know a thing or two about this.

I wasn’t disappointed when I opened to the first page. “What makes the story of the R.M.S. Titanic so important is the men who lived out the expression ‘women and children first.’ From first class gentlemen to 16-year-old cabin boys, from boiler room workers to Wallace Hartley and his musicians–all perished for women and children.”  [emphasis mine]

The Scarlet A+ and SlutWalk NYC 2011

I walked out the door that morning dressed as Hester Prynne–the heroine of the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel, The Scarlet Letter. In America, this book is often studied by students in high school and college. Apparently it was one of the first books that put American Literature on the map as well as illustrating America’s favorite past time of using sexuality against people. I knew that people of all ages would instantly get the message–using a person’s sexual history to shame them is not cool. I also loved that this required me to wearing a pilgrim outfit of sorts which I hoped would hit home the message that rape/slut-shaming has nothing to do with what one wears and everything to do ...

Signs from SlutWalk NYC 2011

Hey everyone! I had a great time at SlutWalk NYC and I wanted to share with my favorite protest signs.

John Locke says “Don’t tell me what I can’t wear!”

suck it, wonder woman! Book Review

I spend a lot of my time on the blog Jezebel and as you may have heard, they took on The Daily Show and Olivia Munn this past year. My boyfriend was rather amused by this, thinking I really ‘had it in’ for Olivia Munn. Not wanting to “dislike” someone just because a blog told me to, I decided to read her book suck it, wonder woman! The Misadventures of a Hollywood Geek.

The Problem with Charity

A few months ago, the blogger Tami, wrote a blog post on Feministe that got me thinking. The post was entitled “Marginalized folks shouldn’t always have to be “the bigger persons’.” Tami argued that in situations where someone is being racist, the recipient of that -ism has the right to be angry and upset—one can’t always be so nice and gently let the other person know they are in fact, being a jerk.

Which brings me to my mom.

What can you do with your body? I can save 3 lives!

Lady Gaga has a great body, doesn’t she? I mean, we love her music, we love her personality, but a lot of people love the way her body looks. They value her body.

I used to have a Lady Gaga-like body. But now, I’ve gained weight. And as a feminist, I’m determined to think positively about my body no matter what shape it is.

Choice doesn’t justify discrimination

Last year I had the privilege of sitting in the audience of The Colbert Report. The warm up comic came  out and was doing his thing. At the time, Newsweek had come out with its magazine that had a picture of Sarah Palin on the cover—a leggy pic that Palin had taken with the magazine Runners World. Now the pic was on the cover of Newsweek with the title “How do you solve a problem like Sarah?” which was presumably about Palin’s political situation and not about her running schedule.

(500) Days of Summer

***Warning Spoiler Alert*****

So after reading this brilliant post at Tiger Beatdown, I wanted to see for myself what irks so many feminists about the movie (500) Days of Summer.

Unfortunately, I knew I would not like the film as the opening credits rolled. Why? Might you ask.
