This is what a [post] feminist [poet] looks like

Gina Myers, a teacher, a poet, and an all around amazing human being, has a piece up over at Delirious Hem, a blog for women poets. Myers’ piece, entitled “This is what a [post] feminist [poet] looks like,” explores her relationship with feminism in a so-called “post feminist” society. 

As she puts it: “My body is something I take with me everywhere I go. I have been called post-feminist, post-avant, post-punk, and post-modern. My heroes include Joe Strummer, Nina Simone, and James Baldwin. I identify as being human before I identify as being a woman, and that shapes everything I do.”

Myers’ poetry is an inspiration to all who read it, and in he piece, she reflects on her work co-directing the Vagina Monologues at a small town community college in the middle of a corn field and overflowing with sexist, homophobic ideologies that only a select few seem to want to fight against.

I did not see one cause as being more important than others, nor did I necessarily see them as being separate causes. The larger issue is social justice, and I have continued to live my life committed to this one cause.

Although I see these various struggles as being one cause, it does not mean I can address them all at once. Perhaps it is a commitment issue, but I devote my attention to whatever cause seems most urgent at the time. Recently, I have witnessed misogyny, sexism, and violence against women ...

Who the hell do you think you are? You claim to be a man of faith. Well, I sayot you, sir, that you are not worthy to so much as pick up the Bible to which you cling so tightly as you spew forth hatred and bigotry.
I’ve got news for you, Dr. Warren. God loves everybody. Yes, everybody. Even the people you absolutely loath. Even, as unfortunate for Christianity as it may be, you. So, I ask you again: Who the hell do you think you are? Things I would like to tell my niece…

Never let anyone tell you that you have to behave a certain way or dress a certain way just because you’re a girl.
Follow your heart. Find activities that you enjoy and and do those. Never let anyone tell you there is a job you can’t do or a sport you can’t play. Know that once you have your heart set on something, there is not a force in the world that can stop you.
You are beautiful. No matter what MTV and Cosmopolitan magazine will have you believe, you are beautiful just the way you are.

Archbishop Chaput, repeat after me: “Abortions! Don’t! Kill! Babies!”

There was an article in the New York Times yesterday about the possibility of Obama inviting Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, who, like his late father, Robert P. Casey Sr. (who was not allowed to speak at the 1992 DNC) is a Roman Catholic who opposes abortion rights, to speak at the DNC this year.

The thinking is that if Sen. Casey speaks at the convention, it will show Catholics who oppose abortion that it is ok to vote for a candidate who supports it. They are also hoping that inviting Casey to speak will rectify his father not being allowed to do so 16 years ago.
