Image of the Day: Students at UNC Refuse to Go Home Until Racist Statue Is Gone

It’s the first week of school at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill but thanks to the administration’s cowardice and inaction, students are missing classes to hold a sit-in at the Silent Sam confederate monument. Although North Carolina’s Governor said UNC can take “immediate measures” to remove the monument, administrators refuse to take it down. Instead, in response to a rally celebrating “The First Day of Silent Sam’s Last Semester,” they sent in cops with riot gear and erected barricades to protect the monument. Not the best way to kick off the academic year, if you ask me. Now, students are holding a sit-in and refuse to leave until “the racist statue is disposed of – however long that takes.”

As you’ll see from the picture, women of color are leading the struggle to silence Sam, which comes as a shock to no one.
