The Feministing mudflap girl wearing a Santa hat

Fuck the Patriarchy, Give to Feministing

When I started writing for Feministing, I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer, even though I have been writing for as long as I can remember. I started writing my first novel at 14, and started fanfiction at 16 (Calzona for LYFE!). Most of both lie unfinished. I wrote papers on papers on papers in college, and couldn’t quite grasp why fiction was so hard for me. I’m not a novelist, or a fiction writer. I don’t always think about characters or storylines, and that’s what I thought writers did.

And during all that time I didn’t think I was a writer, I talked my dad’s ear off about the significance of my favorite commercials, songs, and shows. I thought about Never Scared, my favorite Chris Rock standup special, arguing passionately for the supremacy of Chris Rock over Kevin Hart. I discussed the intricacies of Scandal over drinks, which sometimes devolved into diatribes about my mixed emotions towards Shonda Rimes.

When I was asked to start writing here, I had no idea what I could possibly say or offer. I wasn’t a journalist, and had only written a couple of personal essays prior to accepting the offer to try out. What I’ve learned, however, in the past 10 months is that I actually really love writing about pop culture, and I always have something to say.

I found my voice here, and a sustainable Feministing gives so many other young writers the possibility to discover themselves, their truths, and help them find ways to change the world.

Feministing readers challenge me all the time, and some of my most invigorating conversations have come from folks who read this site. We’re a community in conversation, and you can help ensure the conversation keeps getting to happen.

As the year comes to a close, I hope you will give a few dollars to Feministing so we can, you know, keep dismantling the patriarchy and shit.

Peace & Love,

Katie Barnes (they/them/their) is a pop-culture obsessed activist and writer. While at St. Olaf College studying History and (oddly) Russian (among other things), Katie fell in love with politics, and doing the hard work in the hard places. A retired fanfiction writer, Katie now actually enjoys writing with their name attached. Katie actually loves cornfields, and thinks there is nothing better than a summer night's drive through the Indiana countryside. They love basketball and are a huge fan of the UConn women's team. When not fighting the good fight, you can usually find Katie watching sports, writing, or reading a good book.
