Feministing Jamz: So many new releases!

The last week has brought so many great new EPs and full-length projects by ladies ‘n queers that I am finding it impossible to pick one. Lucky you!

Kali Uchis – Por Vida

This Colombiana’s been making waves this past year, and her soulful debut release is going to keep her on people’s lips. Bonus: it’s a free download!

Ibeyi – Ibeyi

I’ve been obsessed with Ibeyi since this summer, and they just keep putting out gorgeous tracks that mix hip hop, Afro-Cuban soul, sparse electronica, and Yoruba chants. Their debut album is technically not out till February 17th, but you can take a listen to it now over at NPR Music.

Cakes Da Killa – #IMF

We love Cakes here at Jamz. His latest EP gives us more of his signature lightning flow (they don’t call him Da Killa for nothin!) and lusty lyrics. I’m not mad at this.

Rahel – Alkali

Just a couple of weeks ago Rahel shared the visuals for “Serve,” a song that unassumingly worked its way into my faves last summer. Turns out that was just a sneak preview — a couple of days ago she dropped her debut Alkali, and it’s already becoming part of my regular listening. Jamz fave Le1f guests on a track and helped with the writing. The warm vocals, the SERVE rosé in that video (where does a girl get that, I’d like to know)….What’s not to love?

New York, NY

Verónica Bayetti Flores has spent the last years of her life living and breathing reproductive justice. She has led national policy and movement building work on the intersections of immigrants' rights, health care access, young parenthood, and LGBTQ liberation, and has worked to increase access to contraception and abortion, fought for paid sick leave, and demanded access to safe public space for queer youth of color. In 2008 Verónica obtained her Master’s degree in the Sexuality and Health program at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She loves cooking, making art, listening to music, and thinking about the ways art forms traditionally seen as feminine are valued and devalued. In addition to writing for Feministing, she is currently spending most of her time doing policy work to reduce the harms of LGBTQ youth of color's interactions with the police and making sure abortion care is accessible to all regardless of their income.

Verónica is a queer immigrant writer, activist, and rabble-rouser.
