Sexualization of the EDM culture

Electronic dance music, better known as EDM, has fairly recently been introduced to America as a popular music genre. EDM consists of house music, Dubstep, bass music and other sub-genres that fall under electronic music. EDM is mostly affiliated with glow sticks, raves and extremely attractive and barely clothed girls.

As a woman that is a part of the EDM culture, it’s sad to see that hot girls are a large image for the genre. The only thing that matters to me is the music, not the image I need to try to be a part of. Ultra Music Festival is the biggest EDM festival in America, and whatever EDM fans weren’t there, were watching the live stream on Youtube. It was disappointing to see the camera focusing on the extremely good looking girls sitting on top of guys’ shoulders, rather than the artist and amazingly decorated stage.

As a woman a part of this culture, I’m sick of ‘hot girls’ being one of the main images associated with EDM. I’m sure other girls and guys are sick of this too, I didn’t want to see the camera focused on all of the attractive girls for the majority of show, I wanted to see the artist, the main reason why thousands of people were there. I feel that most girls attending an EDM show feel the pressure to be ‘hot’ and dance sexy to meet the expectations for ‘rave girls’ and it’s not about that. It’s about being in a happy, and positive in an environment with thousands of people enjoying the same wonderful thing.
