Did You Know Women Go to Movies Too?

This may just be snarking, but this article really annoyed me.  If you want to read the entire thing and judge for yourself, by all means click the link here .  But I pulled some quotes that annoyed me personally.

"Yet the fact that near every film to top the box office for more than three months has been female-focused does not just reflect a growing enthusiasm among women for films: rather, it also marks what some Hollywood film moguls now refer to as the “Xbox” factor, in which many young men and teenage boys increasingly prefer playing sophisticated video games to watching movies.  “A lot of young males are spending much more time on the internet, games and UFC [ultimate fighting],” Peter Guber, chairman of Mandalay Pictures production company and former studio chief at Sony Pictures, told The Sunday Telegraph.  “They have not abandoned movies but they have diminished as a target, while the female audience has remained robust.”

Ah yes "The XBox Factor", a term in the research of the male psyche recognized by sociologists the world over.  It’s quite rare the phrase that is simultaneously sexist against men AND women at the same time.  They imply that women DON’T spend time on the internet or playing video games, or even watch UFC (though as a male I can tell you I have no interest in watching two sweaty dudes punching eachother in the dick).

"Mr Guber, who has female-friendly films such as The Colour Purple and Flashdance to his name, said that women “have often been an underserved audience”, but “if you speak to the heart with a powerful emotional narrative, you will pull in a strong female audience”.

Ah yes we all know how emotional women are.  I half-expected a reference to "hysteria" or "the vapors" here.  Next thing you know movie theaters will have fainting couches instead of seats.

“Women are not one bloc of moviegoers whose needs can be pre-fitted into a predictable movie mould. Give us good movies, sexy movies, genuinely romantic movies. If you make them, we will come.”

Yes give us sexy romantic movies (women folk LOVE the romance) with handsome blank beefcake male leads that we can fawn over and sacrifice everything because he’s just THAT dreamy.  And make sure it’s a man and a woman, because lord knows making a movie for them queers would be icky.

"The movies may be alternately cheesy and sappy, and the scripts laughable, but teen and tween girls don’t care.”

What the hell do these little bitches know?  Just throw them any crappy flick as long as there’s a sexually-neutered-but-still-hunky male lead involved they come a-runnin’.  It’ll make millions.
