Danish dads of daughters close the wage gap

According to a new study, male CEOs are more likely to work to close the gender pay gap when they have daughters. The study, which is based on data from Danish companies collected between 1995 and 2006, found that the birth of a daughter to a male CEO is correlated with a slight closing of the wage gap at that CEO’s company. Denmark has a gender wage gap of 21.5% – not accounting for rank or hours worked. The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that,

the birth of a daughter to a male CEO caused that gap to close, in his company, that same year, by 0.5 percentage points. Breaking the data down further, the birth of a first ...

Study reveals gender pay gap in new doctors

Did you know that a woman heart surgeon earns about $27, 000 less per year than a male one? That’s according to a new study, published in this month’s issue of Health Affairs. The study finds a gender pay gap of almost $17, 000 among new doctors, a gap that has been widening over the last decade.

As the Wall Street Journal’s Juggle blog reports, the gender pay gap between new doctors, across all specialties, widened by 17% in 2008. That’s up from a 12.5% gap in 1999. Today, new women doctors make $174, 000 a year, while men make $209, 300. And while those are admittedly both large salaries, when you have between $150, 000 and $200, 000 in ...

UK pay gap shrinks, but it’s not all good news

Good news! The pay gap in the UK is shrinking! BBC reports that this year, the pay gap between men and women shrank to 10.2%, the lowest it has ever been since the government began keeping track of it.

However, the news isn’t all good. While wages have risen for women on average, women who work part-time are paid a good deal less than men who work part-time. Also, it’s worth keeping in mind that while 10.2% is an improvement, it represents only a 6.8% drop since 1997.

The general secretary of the Trade Union Congress is not optimistic about what austerity measures might do for future pay gap stats. “With hundreds of thousands of female public servants set to lose ...

Black Marriage Negotiations Video Perpetuates Stereotypes and Ignores Context

The “Black Marriage Negotiations” video has been making it’s rounds on Facebook walls and on Essence’s blog. It has grossed nearly 200,000 hits on YouTube after going viral late last week. It was created by an anonymous user at Xtranormal.com, a site that boasts, “If you can type, you can make movies.”

If only the bar wasn’t so low.  The video isn’t just bunk because it misuses the term “womanist,” a label meant to convey that black women’s emancipation cannot be achieved without black men and children also being fully equal in society. Simply stated, it’s another baseless attack on educated, professional, single, African American women who seek healthy partnerships with men.  There are so many stereotypes about black ...

Yes, Virginia, there is a wage gap

Last week, BNet, a CBS-run business website, ran an article by Penelope Trunk entitled “A Salary Gap Between Men and Women? Oh Please.” The article suggests that Trunk doesn’t really understand, or doesn’t want to think very hard, about how inequality and discrimination function in the workplace.

Trunk takes on the widely acknowledged reality that there is a salary or wage gap between men and women – the idea that when you control for qualifications, age, education, experience, and hours worked, women, on average, are paid less than men for doing exactly the same jobs. While the size of the gap is up for debate, that it exists is simply not up for discussion.  The wage gap exists.
