Trailer: Dear White People puts conversations about race front and center

The full length trailer for Dear White People has been released, and I can’t wait to see the movie. You may remember the Indiegogo campaign for the film, which was super successful and helped take Dear White People to Sundance, where it received rave reviews and was picked up for distribution.

Laughing to the polls

Last Tuesday, I attended the launch of the Lady Parts Justice campaign, a newly designed rapid response reproductive rights messaging hub centering around comedy to mobilize women voters to the polls for local, state and national elections. Some weeks ago, LPJ asked women from across the country to send their stories on abortion to share. I, along with Sally Kohn and Zerlina Maxwell, read stories from women around the country at the event.

I read a story from a woman in Indiana. Her candor was compelling:

Watch President Obama sign an executive order protecting against LGBT employment discrimination

This morning, President Obama is set to sign an executive order banning workplace discrimination against LGBT federal employees. The executive order will not contain additional religious exemptions as the current text of ENDA does – something advocates had feared. This executive order will expand protections for federal employees to include gender identity, as well as barring federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Feministing Five: Stuff Mom Never Told You

While at a friend’s house one afternoon, I overheard a friend listening to a really fantastic podcast. And I know what you’re thinking. “Not another one of those white dude hosts that tries hard to sound not overly geeky yet kinda cool but actually he’s copying that first dude with the glasses.”

This one featured the voices of two women exploring 19th century feminist history with a special emphasis on politics and race. Unlike most lectures you might find in college, the podcast was engaging, accessible, and impeccably researched.
