Matt Lauer is gross, Anne Hathaway kicks slut shaming’s ass

Anne Hathaway went the Today show yesterday to promote Les Miserables (which I am ridiculously excited about like the big nerd I am). And Matt Lauer took the interview as an opportunity to be a disgusting, patronizing pig.

Hathaway had a “wardrobe malfuction” while getting out of a car at the New York premiere of Les Mis. Because our culture is gross like Matt Lauer, photographers quickly snapped shots of Hathaway’s crotch and then spread them all over the internet. And then Lauer treated the photos like they were news. He opened the interview with “Seen a lot of you lately,” which Hathaway gracefully tried to laugh off. Let’s avoid the slut shaming headlines, shall we?

Dear American Media, can we not write headlines like this:

This Reuters article does something pretty annoying in my view. It tries to piecemeal a triangle between Paula Broadwell, Jill Kelley and Holly Petraeus, struggling to cobble a narrative arc ultimately leading us down the path to absolve David Petraeus as if Guido Anselmi in Felini’s 8 1/2.

Somehow, this episode of marital infidelity all became Broadwell’s fault. The former leader of the Iraq and Afghanistan command and CIA Director was so overcome, so seduced by Broadwell’s feminine wiles. That she destroyed the career of a great man. A great military mind that led our troops who was easily beguiled by flesh. That’s the narrative we want to go with? Are ...

Rape culture rampant in Missoula, Montana and everywhere else too

**Trigger warning**

A couple weeks ago, the Justice Department launched a federal investigation into the handling of sexual assault cases in Missoula, Montana. The town has seen 80 reported rapes in the last three years–including 11 cases involving students and accusations against several Grizzlies football players–but local officials say that’s typical for a college town that size. And they’re right.

There’s been a lot of talk about birth control lately. But much of the conversation has been centered around politics and policies, and as a result, the realities of birth control usage have fallen by the wayside a bit.

Maybe that’s why people like Rush Limbaugh make statements which seem to suggest that their understanding of how contraceptives work is subpar at best. And maybe that’s why women’s lived realities of birth control, contraceptives and family planning in general have not been at the center of the national conversation as much as we would like them to be.

It’s almost Halloween, you guys! Which means yet another year of eye-rolling about how TEH SEXY has completely taken over. Jillian Tamaki’s costume ideas in Part 2 of the cartoon above are so hilarious/sad because they not very different at all from actual costumes on the market. Sexy Nemo?! Really?

Courtney mentioned the “so-called Ayelet Waldman overshare” yesterday, but I think it deserves its own post because I agree so hard with Jill that this is why we are losing as a culture.

To recap: After Michele Bachmann made ridiculous and patently false claims about the HPV vaccine in an effort to score political points against Rick Perry, writer Ayelet Waldman, wife of novelist Michael Chabon, took to Twitter to say that she’d gotten HPV from her husband and remind all those sex-panicked conservatives why exactly the HPV vaccine is important.
