Anti-choice org on Planned Parenthood: Like drug dealers, but with sex

It’s truly hard to digest how hilarious this video is from the American Life League on Planned Parenthood and their “agenda” to lure your children into sex addiction with candy penis pops and vagina fruit roll-ups so they can sell them abortions and birth control. The gateway drug? Masturbation.

I repeat, folks — this is not a parody video.

*Fans air* Whoowee! I don’t know about you, but nothing gets me hotter than vulva puppets, vagina macaroons and cartoon penises. (Seriously though, I do kind of want a macaroon now.)

These people never cease to amaze.

Via. Thx to Morgan for the heads up.

Yet another study says abortion doesn’t pose a mental health risk

Anti-choice activists, I hope you’re sitting down. It turns out that, contrary to your wishful thinking, having an abortion does not increase the chances a woman* will suffer mental health issues.

Of course, some of you anti-choicers won’t be convinced by this evidence because it was done by scientists, which you’ll find sketchy. But just so you know, a study, commissioned by the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health, part of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK and funded by the England’s Department of Health, reviewed 44 studies from 1990-2011 on the relationship between abortion and mental health and concluded,

“The best current evidence suggests that it makes no difference to a woman’s mental health whether she chooses to ...

This is what good sex education looks like

Mr. Vernacchio’s “Sexuality and Society” class is definitely this sex-positive feminist’s wet dream. The class, taught as an elective at a private Quaker high school in Philadelphia, represents everything that sex education should be–and everything that, sadly, it is decidedly not these days.

At a time when the conservative push for abstinence-only-until-marriage has left most public schools teaching abstinence-only or abstinence-plus programs, Mr. Vernacchio’s course is a rarity in that it acknowledges that sexuality can be a “force for good.” In a country where even some “comprehensive” sex education is based on the fear-based premise that teens shouldn’t be having sex, but since they might be doing it anyway, they should probably know how to protect themselves, so they don’t ...

Indonesian sex therapist starts new podcast to tackle myths about sex

Photo via AP.

This is great. Today Zoya Amirin, the only woman certified as a sex therapist in Indonesia, is launching a weekly podcast, called “In Bed with Zoya,” to debunk common myths about sex and contraception.

“People here really believe in myths … that’s my biggest challenge,” said Amirin, adding she wants to make her show as cool as possible so people will tune in without feeling they’re being talked down to.

“It’s time to embrace our sexuality in a healthy way,” she said, “and to be mature in our understanding.”

Nearly 40% of Indonesian teenagers have had sex and almost half of them do not use contraception with new partners. And while the folklore about gecko saliva curing ...

Fight sex-negativity by tweeting that you’ve had HPV tomorrow

Courtney mentioned the “so-called Ayelet Waldman overshare” yesterday, but I think it deserves its own post because I agree so hard with Jill that this is why we are losing as a culture.

To recap: After Michele Bachmann made ridiculous and patently false claims about the HPV vaccine in an effort to score political points against Rick Perry, writer Ayelet Waldman, wife of novelist Michael Chabon, took to Twitter to say that she’d gotten HPV from her husband and remind all those sex-panicked conservatives why exactly the HPV vaccine is important. The news that a woman had HPV and is willing to say so on Twitter was somehow deemed news-worthy. And folks on Twitter responded ...

Quick hit: the problem with New York City’s new mandated sex ed programs

Earlier this week, we wrote about the announcement of a mandatory sex ed program in New York City public schools. Mayor Bloomberg’s new law require that comprehensive (which is to say, not abstinence-only), and will be taught in all NYC public high schools and middle schools. This is great news!

However, Anna Lekas Miller at The Nation sees a problem, and it’s one of enforcement and accountability. Namely, there’s no way to check if schools are actually teaching the new sex ed program and, given the current rash of budget cuts in public schools, sex ed will probably be one of the first things to get cut. Lekas Miller writes:

On the surface, Bloomberg’s sex education mandate seems to have it ...

NYC to Require Sex Ed in Public Schools

As the NY Times reports, starting in the upcoming school year, for the first time in nearly two decades, students in New York City’s public middle and high schools will be required to take sex education classes. Previously, NY had been one of 12 states that required H.I.V. education only.

I love that some of the momentum behind this decision was explicitly tied to Mayor Bloomberg’s recent announcement that he will put his own money towards programs and policies that address the needs of minority youth in NYC. Hell yeah, cause we matter and we are currently under-served!! (I’m still classified as a “youth” somewhere, right?)

A few months ago, I gave an interview to the “Where ...

Dismissed for Pre-Marital Sex: BYU Not Taking Responsibility for Student’s Health

Cross posted on Amplify

Brigham Young University basketball starting player Brandon Davies committed a terrible offense: pre-marital sex with his girlfriend. BYU’s honor code forbids students from having premarital sex and instructs them to “live a chaste and virtuous life.” This move by the university this highlights the negative attitude towards sexuality harbored by many conservative religious traditions, especially Mormonism. At a university so conservative on their views about sex, I am concerned about the student’s sexual health and safety. Surely at a University that does not “allow” pre-marital sex, students still are in need of sexual health services. Doesn’t a university that prides itself on being a moral institution ...
