Whose Gun Rights? Black Woman Incarcerated for Self-Defense

Last month Detroit-based environmental justice activist Siwatu-Salama Ra was sentenced to two years in prison for brandishing an unloaded gun in an effort to protect her two year-old daughter and mother from an aggressor. Ra’s “felonious assault” conviction is a blatant contradiction of Michigan’s stand-your-ground laws – yet we haven’t heard anything from NRA supporters, proving once more that the gun rights movement is only concerned with protecting the “freedom” of white men.

#FreeDavia: Another Trans Woman Arrested for Self-Defense

On Friday, January 19, Davia Spain, 23-year-old trans activist, was arrested for “suspicion of domestic violence, burglary and battery.” Witnesses and supporters however argue that she was defending herself from her abuser and that Davia was being unfairly targeted because of her gender identity.

Experts Say George Zimmerman wasn’t screaming for help

George Zimmerman claims he killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in self- defense, though Zimmerman outweighed Martin by over 60 pounds and though his gun outarmed Martin’s pack of skittles. Part of Zimmerman’s dubious defense claim is that he was the one whose screams for help can be heard on the 911 calls made by concerned neighbors. But experts say this is not the case.
