Because I knew you, I’ve been changed for good

“I am going to write fire until it comes out of my ears, my eyes, my noseholes–everywhere. Until it’s every breath I breathe. I’m going to go out like a fucking meteor!” Audre Lorde

I joined Feministing in February of 2005. At the time I was living in San Francisco, CA, and I was working as a substitute school teacher. I had little direction as to where my career was going, no “bigger plan” for myself or how I was going to weave in what I had been told I should cultivate – a passionate, righteous voice committed to gender justice.

When I started blogging, my writing was rough; it was angry and it was righteous. I have no formal training in ...

Happy birthday Samhita!

Happy birthday to our amazing Executive Editor, Samhita Mukhopadhyay!

In the nearly three years that I’ve known her, I’ve had more than a few moments of re-realizing how damn impressive Samhita is. The first time came shortly after I started writing for Feministing. I was actually initially brought on to guest blog while Samhita was taking a break from the site to finish writing her book, so  I hadn’t read that much of her work. Shortly after coming back to regular blogging, she dropped this meditation on veiling, global racism, colonialism, and transnational feminism. That was the first time I really got what an intellectual heavyweight Samhita is. I remember thinking, “This lady is smarter ...

Happy birthday Samhita!

It’s been quite a year for Samhita Mukhopadhyay, Feministing’s fierce executive editor and someone I’m proud to call a personal friend and mentor.

With her breakout book Outdated: Why Dating is Ruining Your Love Life (Seal Press) she achieved new heights, questioning the retrograde sexism, racism, and homophobia of  traditional relationship advice so often aimed at young people and receiving accolades from just about everyone, including Melissa Harris-Perry.

Her Occupy Valentine’s Day was a huge hit, generating buzz and thoughtful discussion about the romantic industrial complex and our popular notions of love.

Plus she keeps droppin knowledge on the blog, whether she’s dissecting the “Shit People Say” memeswith her own definitive take, unpacking the racial dimensions to ...

New feminist podcast with Amanda Marcotte and Samhita Mukhopadhyay

Amanda Marcotte and I have been graciously invited to head up a feminist focused podcast on Citizen Radio that we have titled, Opinionated: The Feminists You Were Warned About. Citizen Radio is the brainchild of the snarky and very smart duo Jamie Kilstein and Allison Kilkenny.

Check out our first episode which covers everything from the destruction of the library at OWS, to Herman Cain stuffing sausage in his mouth to Katie Roiphe wanting to be that girl that all the boys like. We are not politically correct, but we’ll make you LOL. And look out for future eps, we will most certainly have some of your favorite commentators and writers on regularly as special guests.
