Dad Camp: A New Era of Male Accountability

A new reality show on dadhood is sure to spark some conversation this Father’s Day. Although America is only 3 episodes into the new TV series “Dad Camp,” I can’t help but feel somewhat smitten. I think it is the beginning of a meaningful era of male accountability in reality TV and it is an important twist on the cadre of pregnancy shows that have multiplied over the past few years. While there are some potential drawbacks, the main clincher of the show is that it promotes responsible fatherhood while simultaneously empowering mothers.

How to Know You are Dating a Racist (HTKUADAR)

In lieu of this profoundly short-sighted and blatantly racist piece published at the Huffington Post titled “How to Date an Indian,” I thought it was time for me to write my own dating guide to help us stay away from people that might potentially follow this kind of advice.

Alicia Keys, who I consider one of my all-time favorite artists, has a new video out that is, sad to say, seriously disappointing. It’s sort of a time travel through Hollywoodized interracial relationships, complete with a white dude in a truck and a bunch of angry black men. Really, Alicia?

Granted, music videos rarely portray human relationships with any sort of emotional authenticity, but this is one of the most objectifying, shallow portrayals of love I’ve laid eyes on in awhile. Aside from a few online clips, I didn’t watch last week’s ABC Nightline special titled “Why Can’t a Successful Black Woman Find a Man?” But I’ve been following enough of the recent media frenzy around straight, unmarried black women to make an educated guess about the analysis and diagnosis that emerged from the show.
