Mother daughter love in Dia de los Muertos short film

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is fast upon us, and this short film from KQED has me teary-eyed over what a beautiful time of the year this is. I love having this moment to reflect on those who paved the way for me in this life, a chance to eat great food, surround myself with colors, and cherish my loved ones just a little more. I also appreciate it as an opportunity to be very thoughtful about the difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation, and to foster learning and exchange among diverse communities.

Juliana only just learned that Dia de los Muertos may have originally evolved from a celebration of the ...

A female journalist attended a Men’s Rights Conference last weekend. This is her story.

The so-called “men’s rights” movement is a farce. Men’s rights activists (MRAs) hurt and kill both men and women. They make actual work on behalf of men harder. Fuck them.

Now that you know how I really feel about MRAs, you can fully appreciate my fascination with this account of one female, feminist-identified journalist’s time attending an entire conference last weekend specifically for MRAs to connect. Kelsey Miller is one brave feminist. She also comes to a few not-so-surprising conclusions during her time at the conference: namely, that, “there are real issues facing men today” but that, “in training their crosshairs on feminism, MRAs have chosen the wrong enemy.” Sounds about right. ...

Quick Hit: California investigates sterilizations of prisoners

Last year, the Center for Investigative Reporting exposed to the country what California-based prisoners and advocates had known for years: women in the state’s prisons were being sterilized against their will. Now, the AP reports:

State auditors found 39 cases where female state prison inmates may not have understood they were submitting to medical procedures that would leave them sterile, according to a report released Thursday that recommended authorities investigate the doctors and hospitals involved.

State law prohibits inmates from elective sterilizations as methods of birth control. However, prison officials allow sterilizations in cases deemed medically necessary.

Quick Hit: Syreeta on racial bias in photography

This weekend, our own Syreeta chatted with NPR’s On The Media about her recent Buzzfeed piece on the bias against dark skin embedded in the very technology of film photography. Give it a listen. And if you haven’t read her piece yet, you should — it’s a lovely blend of personal narrative and fascinating cultural history.

Quick Hit: Why I Visit Sites of Slavery

When Ani DiFranco decided to host a creative retreat at the Nottoway Plantation, she clearly didn’t think about what kind of statement she was making.

It is evident that she did not stop to consider how hosting a retreat at a plantation that at one point enslaved 150 humans helps to reinforce our historical amnesia and romanticization when it comes to the brutality that was slavery. Many bloggers quickly explained just what was so messed up about the whole debacle, which made me feel a bit better, but also left me feeling slightly unsettled. Where is the line between indulging in rosy-colored stories of happy slaves and remembering the suffering that our nation was built upon? Can we ...
