Friday Feminist Fuck Yeah: Alice Nkom is Woman of the Year

While TIME did pick some pretty awesome ladies for their Person of the Year shortlist, it’s astounding that the magazine hasn’t chosen an individual woman for the grand title since the selection of President Corazon Aquino of the Phillipines in 1986. So Africa is a Country, “the media blog that is not about famine, Bono, or Barack Obama,” has gone ahead and named Alice Nkom the 2012 Woman of the Year. What an inspiring pick. AIAC writes:

Alice Nkom was the first woman to become a lawyer in Cameroon. That was in 1969, and she was 24 years old, and she’s been kicking through ever since. Over the last four decades, Nkom has been a ...

Will today be the day, New York?

There is a lot of buzz in the New York area this morning about the possibility of getting marriage equality by day’s end. My fingers are certainly crossed (which, yes, makes it hard to type). New York is bigger by population than previous legalizing states combined, so the number of Americans that live with marriage equality would more than double.

In honor of our hopes, check Mayor Bloomberg’s important speech, grounding this issue in a long and important history, from a few weeks ago at Cooper Union:

Breaking news on Bloomberg hypocrisy

Perez reported on Bloomberg’s appaling hypocrisy yesterday–making his own “It Gets Better” video while also cutting funding for queer and homeless youth services here in New York City almost simultaneously. Well lo and behold, Bloomberg appears to have seen the error of his ways. This morning, according to the Ali Forney Center, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn and Finance Committee Chair Domenic M. Recchia Jr. announced that the Council and Administration have reached a budgetary agreement on the Fiscal Year 2011 financial plan that fully restores the spending reductions to homeless youth programs proposed by Mayor Bloomberg in the November financial plan.

Damn right.

Republicans block DADT repeal

Democrats were 3 votes short of the 60 they needed yesterday to prevent a filibuster and approve the Defense Appropriations bill, containing the provision ending DADT. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called it like it is, before calling out the vote: “It’s quite clear that they’re trying to run out the clock.”

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told reporters that he was “disappointed, but not surprised.” He also indicated that he wouldn’t move forward on any other military initiatives, like a new education plan, until DADT is sorted out: “I think it would be a serious mistake to start training and preparing before the law is changed because I think it will just confuse the troops,” he said. “What is ...
