Forever 21 back to its old, racist ways

I remember how much I loved Forever 21 (well, its prices) during my days as a struggling college student, but that romance is long over.  In the past year alone, there have been a few reasons that turned our breakup from amicable to straight out hostile. In August, a leaked memo revealed the slashing of health care and other benefits for retail store associates. In September, they pulled NWA and Compton-inspired t-shirts modeled by thin white women thanks to much controversy after tweeting that they were “straight outta Compton.”

Buy some Feministing swag for the holidays!

That’s right folks! Our Feministing store is back up and running after quite a long hiatus — and just in time for the holidays.

Chloe put this new shop o’ feminist fabulousness together, and there’s more products and designs to come once the new year hits — but for now, between the children’s clothes, gift ideas and accessories, there’s quite a bit of awesome swag to choose from.

As far as my personal favorites,  I’ll admit I’m torn between the “Sleepwear and Unmentionables” (sexy briefs included) and the feminist pet products. Here’s one feminist cat lady that will be spending way too much money buying new food bowls for my cats for Christmas, but eff it — they’re Feministing ...

K-Y Intense to launch commercial with lesbian couple

Many of you have seen the commercials by K-Y that feature “real” couples talking about their experiences with K-Y Intense, a gel that intensifies pleasure during sex. Well, it looks like they’re reaching out to some blogger folks on their newest commercial to be aired on Sept 5th, which will feature a lesbian couple:

What I love about this commercial:

It acknowledges that gay people exist. It acknowledges that gay people have sex (and that it’s not “gross or an abomination). It’s perhaps the only ad I’ve seen referring to lesbians having sex that doesn’t portray them as oversexualized, objectified and not really gay but just performing for dudes’ pleasure.

Kudos to you, K-Y. Now can we get some free samples?

Update: We’re getting ...

JC Penny’s back to school catalog tries to get “girly”

Back to back, two t-shirts from JC Penny today that send exactly the message girls need when heading back to school: we don’t need to learn, we’re pretty and boy crazy (teehee).

via JC Penny.

JC Penny has already taken one of the shirts down stating,

We agree that the “Too pretty” t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale.  Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize for any concern we may have caused and assure you that we are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that [our customers] ...

The Gap wants you to cover up your ugly legs

Via The Frisky comes this disgusting Gap window ad. I think Stephanie Marcus, who snapped this photo, is right on when she says about the ad, “Another day, another ad that tries to make people buy their products by making you feel bad about your body.”

Gap is explicitly using shame about having a body that does not conform to mainstream beauty standards to sell products. I’m disturbed the company would choose to do this, but I’m also bothered that it’s an idea for an ad that would work at all.

And yes, the company probably wants the controversy that comes with this ad. Doesn’t change the fact they’re saying certain legs are acceptable to be seen in public and ...

Girly Consumerism

Via Sociological Images comes this heinous credit card teether. It’s pink and the name on the card is “Ima Spender.” Gross. Though I suppose we shouldn’t expect better from the creator of baby high heels.
This reminds me of the Barbie “Fashion Fever Shopping Boutique” that came out a couple of years ago. The toy featured a built-in credit card swiper and a pink credit card that never ran out of money. The commercial is especially disturbing, with a chorus that sings “Buy It!” over and over again.

Transcript (of which I’m sure someone could write a whole thesis on) after the jump
Awesome…a toy that will ensure little girls grow ...

Topless piñatas, stripper pole included

A local news station in Donna Texas reports on a piñata store that is selling piñatas of topless women, some with stripper poles between their legs. The report says that the piñatas are popular for bachelor parties.
You can’t see the actual piñatas very well in the video since they have the fuzzy grey strip covering their breasts, but they look pretty characteristically pornographic, big breasts and long blonde hair.
I think I’m more disturbed by the act of breaking open the piñata woman, and the violence that that invokes, than I am disturbed by the nudity. Piñatas are traditionally filled with candy, tied to a tree or hanging from the ceiling, and broken open by ...
