New Favorite Tumblr: Beyoncé Voters

Last week, Fox News host Jesse Watters accused Hillary Clinton of courting the “single ladies vote” with her response to the Hobby Lobby decision. According to Watters, these women–who make up a quarter of the electorate and broke for Obama by 76 percent last election–“depend on government because they’re not depending on their husbands. They need contraception, health care, and they love to talk about equal pay.”

Watters coined the term “Beyoncé voters” to refer to this birth control-using, equal pay-loving single lady voting bloc, and so of course a perfect Tumblr was born. I can’t wait to hear Watters’ response when us Beyoncé voters deliver another election. Until then, check out more images ...

The Feministing Five: Louise Melling

I don’t know about you, but I can easily say that I have had better Mondays than I did last week. After the  Supreme Court struck down buffer zones around abortion clinics, the Hobby Lobby decision only further disappointed and frightened us about the future of reproductive access in this country.

So for this week, the Feministing Five will be provide expert answers from a leading authority on reproductive rights and freedom, Louise Melling, a Deputy Legal Director of the ACLU and the Director of its Center for Liberty — which houses the ACLU’s Reproductive Freedom Project. The RFP provides critical resources for folks across the country to help realize what their rights are and how to advocate ...

Missouri lawmaker compares getting an abortion to buying a new car or re-carpeting

The Missouri legislature is considering an ultrasound bill that would triple the waiting period before having an abortion in the state to a whopping 72 hours. During a hearing the other day, the bill’s sponsor Rep. Chuck Gatschenberger made his case by drawing on his personal experience with an unintended pregnancy buying a new car and re-carpeting his house.

I’m considering maybe buying a new vehicle. Even when I buy a new vehicle — this is my experience — I don’t go right in there and say, I want to buy that vehicle, and, you know, leave with it. I have to look at it, get information about it, maybe drive it, check prices. There’s lots of things I do going ...

Breitbart News ad features sexist image of Nancy Pelosi as Miley Cyrus

This has got to be a new low, even for the conservative media.

Breitbart News launched its California political coverage today with an ad campaign featuring some street art-style images, including this one of Nancy Pelosi in a Miley Cyrus-esque pose, as well as a confusing one about about Silicon Valley Girls starring Mark Zuckerburg with topless breasts (seriously, can someone explain?). As The Wire notes, the ads are all part of Breitbart’s attempt to cultivate an image of the right wing as cool and edgy. “But the new ads don’t seem dangerous and new; instead they play on old sexist tropes.”

Feministing Five: Elisa Kreisinger

Cutting, splicing, and reattaching her way through pop-culture, Elisa Kreisinger is a vibrant artist of the 21st century. Elisa, through her work at Pop Culture Pirate, creates feminist multi-media remixes of popular culture which lucky for us, she shares with the web. For example, she’s created works that reinvent shows like The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills to create a feminist contestant, have introduced a passion between Mad Men’s Don Draper and Roger Sterling, and (perhaps my personal favorite) documented Peggy Olson’s growth from entry-level to boss.

Elisa’s remixes are smart, pithy, and entertaining, but they also express the potential for pop-culture to centralize more identities and more communities. Additionally, Elisa has become an advocate for ...

Quote of the Day: Minnesota state rep says wanting equal pay and sick leave makes women “look like whiners”

“We heard several bills last week about women’s issues and I kept thinking to myself, these bills are putting us backwards in time. We are losing the respect that we so dearly want in the workplace by bringing up all these special bills for women and almost making us look like whiners.”

That’s state Rep. Andrea Kieffer, of my home state, objecting to an omnibus bill intended to address the barriers to economic progress for Minnesotan women. The legislation would raise the minimum wage to $9.50, enhance protections for victims of domestic and sexual violence, expand access to paid sick leave and childcare, and protect women from discrimination and unfair pay.

Judge overturns Arkansas’s obviously unconstitutional 12-week abortion ban

Last year, Arkansas state legislators overrode a governor’s veto in order to secure the dishonor of having the most blatantly unconstitutional abortion ban in the country. Guess what prize comes with that title? Having the courts strike it down. Surprise!

Republican presidential contenders compete for title of Biggest Abortion Hater to court anti-choice org’s support

On Wednesday night, the GOP’s best and, um, brightest (?) got together for a gala hosted by the deceptively-named Susan B. Anthony List. Hoping to get the prominent anti-choice group’s endorsement in the 2016 presidential primaries, the Republican contenders all shamelessly pandered to the anti-choice fringe.

ThinkProgress has pulled together some of the greatest hits from the night–from our fav Mike Huckabee comparing abortion to killing the elderly to Sen. Mike Lee, a Tea Partier from Utah saying pro-choicers support a “culture of death” and engage in “savagery.” Sen. Ted Cruz, for his part, thinks we’re Satan-worshippers. See? You can tell just how much they care about “the babies” by how little they seem to care about the fact ...
