Mitt Romney and why we need to call racism what it is

At the risk of sounding redundant, but again… enough with the race talk:

“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr. Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have.”

Perhaps we can’t say it enough. I personally have made light of it, uncomfortable , sardonically swiping at the candidate and foot soldiers, noting ironically how this all boils down to resentment that there’s an African American in the White House.

But again, when thoughtless (yet tactical) racial animus comments like these are made in the presidential campaign, do we not call it what it is? To say ‘Anglo-Saxon heritage’ in this context is ...

MA House candidate could be first openly gay Republican in Congress

If he’s victorious this November, Richard Tisei would become the first openly gay Republican in the House of Representatives.

A candidate for Congress in Massachusetts, Tisei supports marriage equality and choice and is expected to be a tough challenger for Democratic Congressman John Tierney who is currently embroiled in personal legal troubles related to his wife and brother in law being involved in a illegal gambling operation.

Tisei doesn’t want his identity to define his candidacy and describes himself as a “live and let live Republican,” who believes “the government should get out of your bedroom, off your back and out of your wallet.”  Tisei’s libertarian platform should play well in south Boston and given the incumbents personal controversies, Tisei has a ...

Teen rape survivor tweets names of rapists, could have faced jail time

A 17-year-old rape survivor in Kentucky was facing jail time after tweeting the names of her rapists, but after her story went viral yesterday the District Attorney decided not to pursue charges which would have carried a punishment of a maximum of 180 days in jail and a $500 fine.

After a plea deal was struck with her rapists, Savannah Dietrich disappointed and angered by the lenient punishment, tweeted,

“There you go, lock me up,” before tweeting their names, “I’m not protecting anyone that made my life a living Hell…They said I can’t talk about it or I’ll be locked up.  So I’m waiting for them to read this and lock me up.  F**k justice.  Protect rapist is more important ...

Hey girl.

The Root’s David Swerdlick is clearly tapped into my mental mind:

Rice is also pro-choice in an anti-choice party that already doesn’t trust Romney’s conservative bona fides in light of his well-known flip-flop on the abortion issue.

And Rice has never run for office before — so that admirable “above the fray” quality would go right out the window once she did. The fact that her name keeps being mentioned as a serious contender says not much about her and much more about the politics of being on the vice presidential “short list.” In theory, she gets the prestige that comes from being on that list, and Romney gets credit for including an African-American woman among the finalists, even if ...

George Zimmerman allegedly molested woman for 10 years

George Zimmerman is facing more disturbing allegations.  The alleged shooter in the Trayvon Martin killing has now been accused of molesting his female relative for a period of 10 years.

The woman identified in court documents as “Witness 9″ claims Zimmerman, who is two years older, began to molest her – in front of other family members at age 6 when Zimmerman was only 8 – and the abuse continued for 10 years.

“Witness 9″ is also alleging that George Zimmerman has a racial bias against black people.

To make matters worse, Zimmerman’s defense team noticed the vocal support coming from conservative media and conveniently after requesting a “chat” with his lead defense attorney, has published information about the alleged victim including ...

Yahoo names Google executive Marissa Mayer as new CEO

Yahoo made a major announcement yesterday, naming Google executive Marissa Mayer as their new president and CEO.  Mayer – Yahoo’s fifth CEO in as many years – is one of the most well known women in tech and business and the move came as a huge surprise even though she has a stellar reputation in Silicon Valley.

An even bigger surprise came later in the day with is Mayer’s announcement via Twitter that she is pregnant.  Mayer has already said her future maternity leave will be brief and it’s clear that such a demanding and high profile position for a woman may reignite the “Having It All,” conversations from a few weeks ago.  Mayer told Fortune that ...

Frank Ocean makes TV debut and beautiful music history

Last week R&B singer Frank Ocean made history.  He is the first R&B singer to come out and reveal that his first love was a man.

With the release of his debut solo album, Channel Orange Ocean makes beautiful music and pushes the boundaries of traditional pop and R&B with not so subtle references to being in love with him.  Critics took notice and wrote up reviews praising his courage considering Hip Hop and R&B’s general unease and open hostility to gays and lesbians.

Ocean’s disclosure is especially interesting given the fact that he has been the lead singer for the openly homophobic and misogynistic rap group Odd Future.  The groups front man Tyler the Creator seems to be ...

Domino’s Pizza thinks rape is a joke

Not sure how many times we have to say it, but RAPE IS NOT A JOKE.  It’s not a metaphor.  Or a clever play on words.  Or a good way to scare women into never drinking alcoholIt’s a reality for so many people, a trauma that warrants empathy and that requires years of healing.

So when I see Domino’s pizza making a joke about rape with their, “No, is the new yes” campaign, which is featured across the top of their artisan pizza boxes, I have to call them out for insensitive, inappropriate and vile advertising that hurts people.
