Three Stereotypes Black Women Are Still Fighting

Listen. I’m so glad Franchesca Ramsey is heading this series for MTV. Her weekly videos cover relevant concepts and ideas with clarity and precision, and last week’s video “3 Black Female Stereotypes that Need to Die” was no different.

Miley-Cyrus-Hair-MTV-VMAs-2015

Let’s pledge to remember the 2015 VMAs

The 2015 VMAs were amazing in the best and worst of ways. Nicki came at Miley, Kanye is running for president, Taylor won all the awards…again, and Rebel Wilson made a tasteless joke. It was an evening.

On contemporary sports culture: privileging masculinity

Athletes. Female athletes. College basketball. Women’s college basketball. Tennis. Women’s tennis. When it comes to sports, we qualify women’s athletics in a way that does not happen with men.

This is appalling.

As would be expected, if you go on the Real World there is a contract with a long list of stipulations that you have to sign. What We Missed

Fuck. North Carolina has become the third state to defund Planned Parenthood.

New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan is up in arms about New York’s potential step towards marriage equality, crying Communism. Literally.

Can the veil be a symbol of Islamic feminism?

The Guardian has an interactive map feature on “the most dangerous” countries in the world to be a woman.

Sort of loving Alice Walker’s response to SlutWalks and reclaiming the word, “slut.”

On MTV’s influence on pro-choice attitudes.

MTV’s “16 and Pregnant” to air special on abortion tomorrow

Nearly a year after Jessica and others asked the question, “Why are there no abortions on 16 and Pregnant?”, MTV has decided to take the issue to task. The fact of the matter is that nearly a third of teen pregnancies end in abortion, so portraying all of the realities of unintended teen pregnancies is critical – especially in support for whatever decision these young women make.

No Easy Decision will air tomorrow night on MTV at 11:30 EST, and will profile three young women’s stories about their decision to have an abortion. It’s incredibly rare that abortion is depicted in a realistic way on television (or, I should say, it’s rare that the issue is televised ...
