Southern Tuesday: Election Recap

Mitt Romney still can’t close the deal with GOP primary voters.

It feels like I’ve been writing this same line over and over the past few months.  Last night on Southern Tuesday, Mississippi and Alabama cast votes for their Republican nominee.  Rick Santorum came out on top in both contests. Newt Gingrich (who overperforms in the southern states) came in second.  And Mitt Romney, third in both states.

At this stage in the game, 27 states have voted.  Mitt Romney has been considered the frontrunner the entire time — with a few moments of weakness when other candidates surged ahead temporarily, but he has significantly more money and his SuperPAC floods the airwaves in each state with negative ads attacking opponents. ...

Super Tuesday recap: Mitt rolls on

Last night was hardly the decisive Super Tuesday victory of years past, but it seems this morning, after last night’s Ohio haze, that Mitt Romney has pulled ahead in the Republican primary.

Here’s how it broke down last night: Mitt Romney won Alaska, Idaho, Massachusetts, Ohio (by a very small margin, it seems), Vermont, Virgina and Wyoming. Rick Santorum won North Dakota, Oklahoma and Tennessee. And Newt Gingrich, making a point of not bowing out, won Georgia.

So what does this mean, other than the fact that this interminable GOP primary season rolls on? By most accounts, it’s becoming increasingly evident that Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee, though likely not formally and finally for some time yet. ...

Mitt Romney says he cares about Americans, but not the very poor

In a stunning demonstration of his lack of empathy, tact and political savvy, Mitt Romney confirmed all of the accusations that he is privileged and out of touch with most Americans and specifically insensitive to the hardships so many Americans are currently experiencing.

I particularly love the way he suggests that the very poor are not “Americans.” And of course the great irony, as Think Progress points out, is that Romney wants to cut the very programs– which are already insufficient– he claims take care of the poor.

I’m in the race because I care about Americans. I’m not concerned with the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs ...

A Cheat (no pun intended) Sheet on Romney’s Tax Returns

Mitt Romney has finally released his tax returns, after being nearly universally criticized for not doing so already. Interestingly enough, Mitt’s father George Romney was a pioneer in the field of financial transparency, releasing 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in 1968. Well, in an “unlike father, unlike son” moment, Romney has limited his tax releases to one year’s worth.

Think Progress points out the 6 most important and disturbing facts revealed by the tax returns (besides the fact that Mitt made $21.7 million in 2010 and $20.9 million in 2011 or, as Mitt would probably call it, “not very much”). Let’s have a looksie!

1. Romney paid a lower tax rate than many middle-class Americans: ...

Romney may have won the New Hampshire primary, but he’s still a jerk

In an unprecedented win, Mitt Romney took the NH primary by about 40% last night. It was unprecedented in that rarely does a nominee take Iowa and New Hampshire, however, Republican voter turn-out was lower than in 2008. From any objective stand-point the Republicans look screwed (and not in the good way), since most of their conservative base hates Mitt Romney because to them, he is not conservative enough. But to us, he continues to be an epic asshole. He also lies quite a bit.

See here in his NH primary speech where he claims that Obama “apologized for America.” Strangely, I wasn’t able to find a quote of Obama saying this anywhere.

The world Mitt Romney is campaigning ...

Romney finishes Iowa caucus three way on top, despite surging Santorum

The hot and heavy three way in Iowa between Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum lasted late into the night. The lead position went back and forth, but despite Santorum surging all over, Romney ultimately pulled out on top. A lack of caucus enthusiasm led to a tight sparring match between the three men. While Romney finished ahead of Santorum, he led by only 8 votes, 30,015 to 30,007. Paul cleaned up farther behind with 26,219 votes. The three way pulled away quickly from Gingrich and Perry. The latter, perhaps a sore loser, is returning to Texas to “assess” his campaign’s future. Michele Bachmann, unsurprisingly, was never really an active participant.

In some ways, Romney and Santorum ...

Gay Vietnam veteran: 1 Mitt Romney: 0

Watch the typically very composed Mitt Romney get all awkward and then try to sneak away when asked about gay marriage by an old white guy who turns out to be gay. Romney’s stereotypes about this guy kinda backfired, huh? Guess you never know when someone is going to totally fail at joining you in bigotry and end up being awesome.

ABC has a longer video clip, including Bob Garon’s reaction to Romney saying he should have less rights than straight people.
