Gun violence video mashup with Melissa Harris-Perry & more

As I wrote earlier, I’ve been struck by the unproductive coverage of the Aurora Colorado shooting. Thankfully, some politicians, like mayor Michael Bloomberg and Rep Carolyn McCarthy (whose husband was killed and whose son was paralyzed by gun violence), as well as some in the media, like Melissa Harris-Perry, have been fearless in linking tragedy to policy. In contrast, others, like Senator Ron Johnston, are not only refusing to look at the connection between gun laws and violence, but suggesting that armed citizens could have prevented the killing. The idea that armed citizens could have engaged in a shoot out with a men in full riot gear without hurting others is far-fetched at best.

I will updating this post ...

Monday Morning Feminist Fix: MHP Show on Michigan anti-choice super-bill (“vagina” included)

Rep. Lisa Brown, who was banned from speaking on the Michigan House floor last week for saying the word “vagina,” talked to Melissa Harris-Perry about the Michigan anti-choice super-bill passed last week, including our own Chloe, who rocked it as usual.

Melissa Harris-Perry talks “War on Women” and Beyonce

I recently interviewed Professor Melissa Harris-Perry for Loop21.com and she dished on everything from intersectionality to Beyonce.  Melissa Harris-Perry‘s show (by the same name) has been such a breath of fresh air on the cable news landscape.  They’ve had a wide array of segments that will surely attract different swaths of viewing audiences.

It’s important for us to have her perspective as a woman of color and a feminist in the public conversation especially at a time when women’s rights and bodies are under assault.  #Nerdland (which is the hashtag for the show) is certainly a place where a variety of perspectives are welcome, challenged, and debated and this has allowed for a higher level of intellectual conversation than we ...

Melissa Harris-Perry Show kicks off this past weekend, Chloe rocks the mic

I think the last time I was this excited to get up on a weekend was for Saturday morning cartoons back in ’87 (Gummi Bears, anyone?). Seriously though, I don’t doubt that every feminist in America was freaking over this past weekend’s debut of Melissa Harris-Perry’s new show on MSNBC, which was — not surprisingly — fantastic. And as a bonus, our very own Chloe was invited to come play, and rocked it big-time. Here’s a segment on the birth control debacle:

“I have an aspirin between my legs so I can’t get pregnant until the end of this show.” Amazing.

Check out any missed segments here, and MHP’s blog for updates on the show. Can’t ...

Not Oprah’s Book Club: Sister Citizen

We at Feministing have long been fans of Melissa Harris-Perry who has become a voice for young women in politics and specifically for young women of color who were tired of feeling invisible in political conversations. Her political analysis is on point, but she is also unconventionally honest, which sometimes makes her controversial. And she is not afraid to walk that line between academic rigor and mainstream accessibility. (She also blurbed my book–which was an honor since I am a long time fan).

So, when I sat down with her new book Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes and Black Women in America, I was already expecting her usual rigorous, forward-thinking candor in laying out the ways that black women’s identities ...
