7 young feminist role models you should know

It’s Back-to-School time — or if you’re out of school, “Holy Shit I’m Old” time! Before we get too ahead in our Tuesday (and thus, the recognition there is no legitimate reason for us to go school supply shopping), let’s take some time to meet some young feminist leaders — here’s to the Class of Being Awesome!

Jazz

Jazz is a transgender girl advocate who has shared her story with the world since 2007 with a 20/20 Barbara Walters special. Jazz and her family started the Transkids Purple Rainbow Foundation — an organization that offers resources and advice to trans kids and their families. For those of us who have been following Jazz’s activism for some years, it is very ...

New Favorite Comic: Manfeels Park

The brilliant new comic Manfeels Park, created by two women based in Scotland, pairs scenes from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with actual anti-feminist, mansplaining comments on the interwebs.

As Sarah Seltzer notes at Salon, in a good encapsulation of the feminist response to sexist trolls, most of the comics involve Lizzy Bennet rolling her eyes at the inane comments of the men around her. In this one, Lizzy stifles a giggle at an argument about why women shouldn’t be ordained in the Mormon church…

Trailer: Dear White People puts conversations about race front and center

The full length trailer for Dear White People has been released, and I can’t wait to see the movie. You may remember the Indiegogo campaign for the film, which was super successful and helped take Dear White People to Sundance, where it received rave reviews and was picked up for distribution.

Laughing to the polls

Last Tuesday, I attended the launch of the Lady Parts Justice campaign, a newly designed rapid response reproductive rights messaging hub centering around comedy to mobilize women voters to the polls for local, state and national elections. Some weeks ago, LPJ asked women from across the country to send their stories on abortion to share. I, along with Sally Kohn and Zerlina Maxwell, read stories from women around the country at the event.

I read a story from a woman in Indiana. Her candor was compelling:

Last night, The Daily Show looked at the recent sexual assault case at James Madison University, in which the perpetrators were punished with “expulsion after graduation.” Or, as Jon Stewart notes, “graduation.”

Photo of the Day: Attack of the giant vagina!

This qualifies as Important Feminist News because I’m pretty sure a man-eating vagina that entraps innocent men is every MRA’s recurring nightmare. And it actually happened to this poor US exchange student in Tübingen, Germany.

It took 22 firefighters to get the kid out of Peruvian artist Fernando de la Jara’s giant sculpture. There’s a lesson here somewhere.
