Rick Santorum: Single mothers “breed” criminals

From the Rick Santorm archives, new foolishness emerges. As unearthed by the good people at Mother Jones, in 1994 when Santorum was running for Senate in Pennsylvania he boldly asserted that single moms were the downfall of the United States. At a town hall in Clairton, Pennsylvania, Santorum said:

“Most people agree a continuation of the current [welfare] system will be the ruination of this country. We are seeing it. We are seeing the fabric of this country fall apart, and it’s falling apart because of single moms.”

Santorum made this point in the context of government spending and moralizing about women’s life choices, but he went further to make a ridiculous assertion about single motherhood and crime, telling the Philadelphia Inquirer that ...

Super Tuesday recap: Mitt rolls on

Last night was hardly the decisive Super Tuesday victory of years past, but it seems this morning, after last night’s Ohio haze, that Mitt Romney has pulled ahead in the Republican primary.

Here’s how it broke down last night: Mitt Romney won Alaska, Idaho, Massachusetts, Ohio (by a very small margin, it seems), Vermont, Virgina and Wyoming. Rick Santorum won North Dakota, Oklahoma and Tennessee. And Newt Gingrich, making a point of not bowing out, won Georgia.

So what does this mean, other than the fact that this interminable GOP primary season rolls on? By most accounts, it’s becoming increasingly evident that Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee, though likely not formally and finally for some time yet. ...

URGENT ACTION: Stop the GOP war on women!

It’s almost the end of the day, but your work isn’t done yet, folks.

As Vanessa mentioned yesterday, Congressman Joe Pitts has yet another anti-abortion-funding bill. And the House leadership is pushing it through at warp speed. Nevermind jobs! Economy shmeckonomy! Wall street regulations be darned! Keeping women from using their health insurance to, you know, get health care is at the top o’ the agenda.

H.R. 358, the so-called “Protect Life Act” is an intensified remix of the Stupak-Pitts Amendment on which it is modeled. It would do a few things:

End abortion coverage in state health care exchanges, the public marketplaces for health insurance starting in 2014 under the Affordable Care Act. Eventually, most people are ...

Guest Post: Latest GOP debate features flip flops and falsities

By Silpa Kovvali

So, before I get started, I think it’s important to preface my debate analysis by saying it sucks. Shouting “BEHOLD, RIDICULOUS PEOPLE SAYING RIDICULOUS THINGS” makes me feel superior and all, but it doesn’t offer a challenge or the chance to change my mind or mature. And I’m not the only American of voting age. 225 million lost opportunities are just some of the many reasons why last night was bad for our country.

These candidates have legitimate differences of opinion, and that some of them have beliefs other reasonably-minded people hold. I would have enjoyed watching a Republican Primary debate that addressed these differences in a well-informed, rigorous, non-personal fashion. I would have enjoyed hashing out those viewpoints ...

GOP Anti-Choice Bill Includes Revision that Redefines Rape – by Discounting It

Trigger warning

Has someone from the GOP been talking to Naomi Wolf?

Have you been drugged and raped? Raped while unconscious? Raped by your uncle? Apparently according to the GOP House, this isn’t really rape. Mother Jones reports:

For years, federal laws restricting the use of government funds to pay for abortions have included exemptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. (Another exemption covers pregnancies that could endanger the life of the woman.) But the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” a bill with 173 mostly Republican co-sponsors that House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has dubbed a top priority in the new Congress, contains a provision that would rewrite the rules to limit drastically the ...
