Dream Defenders take Florida Capitol, meet with Gov. Scott

In the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal, the Dream Defenders–a student collective of young people of color–has taken to the Florida Capitol. The group began their occupation on Tuesday, demanding the passage of the Trayvon Martin Act. According to Colorlines, “the bill would address racial profiling, ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws and school-to-prison pipeline issues — ‘the three pillars that led to George Zimmerman getting away with killing Trayvon Martin,’ said Dream Defender Philip Agnew on a media call.”

(Yeah, I said it.) And Monday night, the world witnessed Genie Lauren (@moreandagain) galvanize #BlackTwitter to block a book deal for Juror B37 from the George Zimmerman Trial. George Zimmerman allegedly molested woman for 10 years

George Zimmerman is facing more disturbing allegations. The alleged shooter in the Trayvon Martin killing has now been accused of molesting his female relative for a period of 10 years.

The woman identified in court documents as “Witness 9″ claims Zimmerman, who is two years older, began to molest her – in front of other family members at age 6 when Zimmerman was only 8 – and the abuse continued for 10 years.

“Witness 9″ is also alleging that George Zimmerman has a racial bias against black people.

Florida: You can kill an unarmed teen but can’t defend yourself against an abuser

What happens when you have a criminal record, fatally shoot a teenager armed with nothing more than a pack of skittles and an ice-tea and argue you were justified under Florida’s Stand Your Ground Laws? Nothing. The police believe you and it takes a national media campaign to actually get the criminal justice system to look into the case.

What happens when you have no criminal record, don’t harm anyone, but fire shots to scare off an abusive husband, who has choked and punched you, and just threatened to kill you? You get sentenced to 20 years of prison, of course. This is justice in Florida, where Marissa Alexander was sentenced to 20 years of jail time on Friday. ...

An anonymous person from Virginia Beach, Virginia sold “10 Pack Trayvon Martin Targets” on the website GunBroker.com (the product has since been removed from the site). For $8, you could buy the item, whose description read as follows:

Breaking: George Zimmerman has a new social media strategy!

When god closes a website, he opens a Facebook page! George Zimmerman’s defense attorney, Mark O’Mara, has established a Facebook and Twitter account for his client after Zimmerman disabled his previous website, which raised $200,000 for him. Zimmerman just plum forgot to disclose this money when the judge was determining his bond, something his lawyer deemed an “oversight.” You know when you forget about a couple hundred thousand dollars you have lying around? Of course you do – we’ve all been there. As of 2:11 PM on April 30th, the Facebook page already has 772 likes, and the twitter account has 625 followers and 41 tweets.

George Zimmerman apologizes to Trayvon Martin’s parents, gets bond at $150K

George Zimmerman took the witness stand during his bail hearing and apologized to Trayvon Martin’s parents for the death of their son.

The Associated Press reports that Zimmerman made the brief statement during his bond hearing. He is currently awaiting trial and faces life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder in a case that has captured the nation.

Zimmerman told Martin’s parents that he was “sorry for the loss of your son” and stated that he didn’t know that Martin was both 17 and unarmed during their altercation in Sanford, Florida.

Natalie Jackson, an attorney for the Martin family, said Zimmerman’s apology was “insulting,” adding, “This is the most unmeaningful apology we’ve ever seen in our entire lives.”

George Zimmerman charged with 2nd degree murder for Trayvon Martin killing

Over at EBONY, I explain what the second degree murder charge in the Trayvon Martin case means and what happens next. Yesterday, George Zimmerman was finally arrested and charged for the killing of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman is in custody and will have a standard bond hearing today which will be televised.
