And though it might feel like it to those of us here in the US, counting ourselves lucky if we get a single paid day off at all, this place is not, in fact, a fantastical utopia in a parallel universe.

Feminism shouldn’t make men comfortable

Emma Watson’s speech on gender equality at the UN got a lot of attention, and that’s great. The more that hop the feminism train and use their platforms to spread the message, the merrier. But there’s a tiny little thing I’d like to disagree with her about.

The thrust of the speech is about getting men on board with the mission of gender equality. Watson said: “How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation? Quote of the Day: Minnesota state rep says wanting equal pay and sick leave makes women “look like whiners”

“We heard several bills last week about women’s issues and I kept thinking to myself, these bills are putting us backwards in time. We are losing the respect that we so dearly want in the workplace by bringing up all these special bills for women and almost making us look like whiners.”

That’s state Rep. Andrea Kieffer, of my home state, objecting to an omnibus bill intended to address the barriers to economic progress for Minnesotan women. The legislation would raise the minimum wage to $9.50, enhance protections for victims of domestic and sexual violence, expand access to paid sick leave and childcare, and protect women from discrimination and unfair pay.

Does a more equal marriage mean less sex? 5 alternative theories

Lori Gottlieb had a piece in the New York Times Magazine this weekend called “Does A More Equal Marriage Mean Less Sex?” By “equal marriage,” she means that “both spouses work and take care of the house and that the relationship is built on equal power, shared interests and friendship.” And aside from a few rather offensive generalizations about queer couples, she seems to mainly be talking about heterosexual relationships. VIDA’s 2012 Count shows the literary gender byline gap isn’t improving

I’m off to Boston for the annual Association of Writing Programs (AWP) Conference this week, where +/- 10k writers, editors, agents, publishers descend on the city and nerd out over craft, and geek out and build friendships with their favorite writers and editors. I anticipate a good piece of the talk around the conference will center around Monday’s release of VIDA’s 2012 Count report, which scrutinizes thought leader publication’s ratio of women writers and reviewers, as well as reviews of books written by women. Since 2010, VIDA (Women In Literary Arts) has done the good and dirty work of quantifying the void in women’s representation in publishing. This year’s report shows a backslide.
