Why Feministing matters, or how I learned to stop worrying and start having opinions

In 2004, the year I graduated college, I had the cliched personal crisis that everyone has when What do I want to do with my life? suddenly becomes a practical question, not a thought exercise. I knew I wanted to be a magazine writer. But I couldn’t afford to take an unpaid  internship, and my only experience was in newspapers. I’d also recently started calling myself a feminist, which seemed irreconcilable with being an “objective” journalist.

So I followed my then-boyfriend to New York and took a job at a women’s rights nonprofit. I found myself bored and alienated. Until my boss mentioned ...

White hats off: Feministing writers deconstruct the Scandal rape scene

Ed. note: Last week’s episode of Scandal, “Everything’s Coming Up Mellie,” has gotten a lot of attention for its depiction of a rape involving  Mellie Grant and her father in law, Big Jerry. The Feministing crew had a lot of thoughts on the rape scene itself as well as some of the larger issues it raises around depictions and tropes of sexual assault in mainstream media. We organized our thoughts into a group post, below, just in time for the next episode to air tonight. Enjoy!

Lori: I’m not that surprised that Scandal depicted a graphic sexual assault. The show is by definition sensationalist and, let’s face it, borderline absurd at points with its wild plot twists and highly oversimplified depiction of a ...

The Feministing crew is honored, humbled, and blown away by the outpouring of support our Kickstarter received on its first day. As of writing this, we’re about to cross $10,000 from 300 backers, which brings us 1/3 of the way to our goal for relaunching Feministing!

We know yesterday’s fundraising success is down to you, the Feministing community. We’re so grateful for every dollar you give and everyone you encourage to donate, as well.

We thought you might like to know you were joined yesterday by Rosario Dawson as a backer of the campaign:

Feministing #TimesTen: We’re relaunching Feministing, and we need your money!

You know the Feministing crew doesn’t like to beat around the bush. We haven’t done a lot of that in the almost ten years we’ve been around, and we won’t do it now. We’d rather be straightforward: we need your money.

For nearly a decade, we’ve been severely under-funded, earning a shoestring budget from ad revenue while mainly running the site as a labor of love. It’s no longer sustainable, and it’s time to change that. This month, we’re running a Kickstarter campaign to fund a huge relaunch of Feministing. And we hope you’ll be part of it!

Happy birthday Zerlina!

You may have noticed a lot of Feministing crew members have birthday right around now. Yes, this is part of a nefarious plan for Scorpios to take over the blog. And Saturday was Zerlina Maxwell‘s birthday!
