What about the fatties? Feminist ramblings on @PostBigFines

As a card-carrying member of Black Twitter and a self-identified (and sometimes non-consensually labeled) fat girl, I have a love/hate relationship with @PostBigFines. This Twitter account — originally named @PostBigBitches — follows the trend of admiration sites like @PostBadBitches, @PostBadTatts, and my personal favorite @PostBadBeards (swoons). As mentioned in their bio, PostBigFines is a place to admire women of “all levels of thickness.”

For Black Twitter, PostBigFines (PBF) is sort of a direct response to PostBadBitches, which has set the standard for which women are “bad” and those who aren’t. Video: Seeing the beauty in fat

We get taught in our culture that thin is attractive and fat isn’t, so it can take work to undo that training. I know we often say that “all bodies are beautiful” and can come in “all shapes and sizes” but I think we all know plenty of people who say that and do not mean it. Sometimes, finding fat bodies attractive is something we have to learn is OK, just like we learned to believe that skinny bodies are the most beautiful.

Body Positive

Our first assignment for the Women Filmmakers class I’m taking at Hampshire College was to create a short slideshow about an autobiographical event that shaped how we construct ourselves with specific attention to gender.

My friend and classmate, Dot, produced a wonderful piece about body positivity.  Dot’s piece about body size and normalized images of desire is an honest, frank and candid narrative of the need for positive acceptance of all body sizes.  I could go on about how wonderful this short piece is but her work can and does speak for itself.

Our first assignment for the Women Filmmakers class I’m taking at Hampshire College was to create a short slideshow about an autobiographical event that shaped how we construct ourselves with specific attention to gender.
