Mt. Holyoke college changes policy to admit trans women

This week Mt. Holyoke, a women’s college in the Pioneer Valley in MA, announced it will be changing its admissions policy to include trans women as applicants who will be considered for admission:

Mount Holyoke College welcomes applications for our undergraduate program from any qualified student who is female or identifies as a woman.

Mt. Holyoke released a FAQ on transgender admission explaining the policy and how the school came to this decision:

Watch President Obama sign an executive order protecting against LGBT employment discrimination

This morning, President Obama is set to sign an executive order banning workplace discrimination against LGBT federal employees. The executive order will not contain additional religious exemptions as the current text of ENDA does – something advocates had feared. This executive order will expand protections for federal employees to include gender identity, as well as barring federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

“We deserve better than the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.”

Writing in The Guardian, our own Jos Truit says it’s time to make a unified push for comprehensive, inclusive anti-discrimination “legislation that actually has teeth.”

Forty years ago last week, Bella Abzug introduced the Equality Act in Congress, which would have amended the Civil Rights Act to include protections from discrimination based on sexual orientation in housing, public accommodations and employment. The Employment Non-Discrimination Act, or ENDA, which covers employment discrimination, was introduced 20 years later, in 1994.

It’s now 2014, and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people still have no national law that prevents employers, landlords, hoteliers or even restaurant owners from discriminating against us because of our sexual orientations or gender identities. It’s long past time to change that, ...

Do women’s colleges really need to discriminate against trans women because of federal guidelines?

Last year we covered the case of Calliope Wong, a young woman who was rejected from Smith because she’s trans. Some women’s colleges, like Simmons which admitted Wong, have moved to be inclusive of trans women in keeping with their mission to serve women. And then there are so-called “women’s colleges” like Smith that are continuing policies of exclusion. Two weeks ago, Smith students held another protest in favor of trans women’s inclusion at the school – and on Saturday Suzanna interviewed two members of Smith Q & A about their efforts.

Yesterday Arizona tried to cement its reputation for passing the worst, most bigoted legislation when the State House and Senate approved a “right to discriminate” bill designed to legalize discrimination against LGBTQ people on religious grounds. It now heads to Tea Party Governor Jan Brewer – gee, I wonder if she’ll sign it.

Rocco’s Little Chicago Pizzeria in Tucson, AZ quickly responded with a sign aimed at AZ legislators, which the restaurant posted on their Facebook:

When I saw the following headline, I thought I had accidentally stumbled onto The Onion website:

Formal complaints over sexism should be last resort for women:  The negative impact of formal reporting outweighs any benefits, writes a lawyer. Instead, define your boundaries early on.

But no, I was on The Guardian’s website, in a section called “Women in Leadership,” no less. Since Women in Leadership defines itself as  a “community” which “discuss[es] the lack of women at the top and what we can do to change this,” I was sure that the op-ed they posted on Tuesday wasn’t as sexist and ridiculous as it seemed.
