Rep. Steve King proves how much he sucks….again

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) really sucks.  Apparently, when he’s not ranting about Muslims, he’s suggesting a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” approach for the workplace.  Because you know that worked out great for the military (eyeroll).

Currently, there is no federal protection for LGBT employees to prevent being terminated from their job because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.  Rep. King was asked recently if business should be able to discriminate on who they hire or fire.  According to Rep. King, the employee should simply “hide” it from the employer if that risk is there,

Navy to disallow on base same-sex weddings.

Due to pressure from Republican lawmakers the Navy is set to reverse it’s decision on allowing military chaplains to officiate same-sex marriages on navy bases.

In an April 13 memo on “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal training, Rear Adm. Mark L. Tidd, Chief of Navy Chaplains, clarified that base facilities are “sexual orientation neutral,” and that chaplains may perform marriages for gay couples “if it is conducted in accordance with the laws of a state which permits same-sex marriage[.]” Chaplains could elect to officiate should a ceremony be “consistent with the tenets of his or her religious organization.”

But Tidd reversed course late Tuesday, writing that his guidance is suspended pending “additional legal and policy review and inter-Departmental ...

The Post-DADT Battle for Trans Servicemembers

Amanda Hess has an important post from last week discussing the political issues surrounding the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal and the struggle that trans servicemembers have had and are facing now that DADT is on its way out. Obama signs Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal

This morning, President Obama signed into law the repeal of the 17-year old discriminatory military policy Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He stated, “No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie.”

Pam’s House Blend has full remarks here, including reactions to the signing and an interview with Dan Choi, who was at the signing.

While it will actually be a couple of months before the repeal goes into effect, this is one historic day of DADT’s end.

BREAKING: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Imminent; DREAM Act dies in the Senate

After the last two years of promises and let-downs, high hopes and massive hold-ups, finally ending the discriminatory military policy Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell has been decided by the Senate with a vote of 63 to 33  to close the debate and allow the repeal to move forward. This means just 51 Senators can now vote on the repeal, which is expected to happen by the end of the weekend — and then signed by President Obama., Defense Secretary Gates and Admiral Mike Mullen.

But the military ban will not literally end immediately thereafter; Pam’s House Blend has the statement from the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network on what needs to happen before the ban is completely over ...
