Reminder: Don’t look at those stolen nude images of female celebs

No doubt you’ve heard by now of the Great Celebrity Naked Photo Leak of 2014. Thanks to an asshole hacker on 4chan, we now have proof that — as Roxane Gay notes — “beneath their clothes, celebrities are naked.” Shocking, I know. Here’s a reminder from Clementine Ford that the release of these stolen photos is a crime — and a violation that you are are participating in if you seek out and share the images.

New Favorite Tumblr: I Believe You, It’s Not Your Fault

I Believe You | It’s Not Your Fault is a space for older folks to offer support to young people dealing with the bullshit of rape culture alone.

The site was started by Lindy West after a woman writer shared a story about a friend’s young daughter who was being sexually harassed at school but “had no adult in her life who’s even remotely versed in concepts like victim-blaming and slut-shaming and boundaries and consent.” She wanted some resources to give the girl that would drive home the message: I believe you. It’s not your fault.

“Affirmative consent” just means mutual desire. And it should definitely be the standard.

In response to a proposed California bill that would implement an “affirmative consent” standard on college campuses, there’s been a number of misinformed and often straight-up hysterical reactions from folks who think that requiring people to ensure they have, at every point, “affirmative, conscious, and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity” is absurd and/or impossible.

I think it’s fair to question how useful legislation is for creating a culture of affirmative consent–though, for the record, I agree with Amanda Hess, that as long as they include non-verbal cues, affirmative consent laws are a good idea. A few months ago, I received a Kickstarter perk for being a contributor to FORCE’s fundraising campaign. Explicit Content: A brief intro to Trap Feminism

Among other things, I’ve identified as a hip hop feminist. The term does the job of expressing my engagement in a culture of commodified blackness. I’ve also talked here about how hood feminism resonated with me. But neither term truly speaks to my inner feminist hoochie; nor explains the complex, sex-positive, financially ambitious, and self-affirming components of my feminism. But through these lens, I’ve been able to identify other spaces that do. Trap music is one of them. It’s easy to get caught up in the problematic elements of drug dealing and violence in communities of color, themes that are prevalent in trap music, but there is more than meets the eye.

My original post, about my experience with consent was an excerpt from something on my personal blog. It was a mistake for me to think that everyone would be able to clearly define what is mine vs. what is Feministing’s.
