Are sexism and pay disparities sending women to college?

I was raised by an educator. My Granny was a teacher and my sister followed her career path, later becoming an assistant principal. Growing up I wasn’t disciplined for too many things  was disciplined the most for fucking up in school. If my mother or grandmother got word that I was even late for a class too many times I could expect to grounded swiftly. For my parents (my grandmother was one of my parents), education was the righteous path and college was the promised land. When senior year of high school came around I had already decided which school I wanted to go, which ones I would apply to so I’d have options, and which program of study I ...

Today in post-racial America: University of Alabama sororities won’t let black women pledge

Roll Tide! Except if you happen to be a black woman. The University of Alabama’s student paper the Crimson White is reporting that at least four sororities at the school will not allow black students to pledge. The sororities Alpha Gamma Delta, Tri Delta, Chi Omega, and Pi Beta Phi all blocked two qualified black students from pledging this fall, and the school’s paper says it’s because of their skin color and alumni influence over the selection process.

Via The Crimson White:

“Are we really not going to talk about the black girl?”

The question – asked by Alpha Gamma Delta member Melanie Gotz during her chapter’s sorority recruitment – was greeted by silence. The sorority’s active members and a few alumnae gathered ...

Quick Hit: Alexandra on ending rape culture on college campuses

Our own Alexandra has an important piece up at the Guardian today about the prevalence of sexual violence on college campuses, and the shameful lack of support survivors tend to receive from campus administrations and even the federal government:

When someone attempted to rape me my freshman year, I asked my college, Yale University, for help, but instead I was basically advised to keep quiet. I shouldn’t formally report the assault, I was told. Despite my clear and repeated “no”, school administrators cast the whole event as a misunderstanding among friends.

In short, I was told to be a good girl. And for four years, I listened.

It’s doubly dangerous that these ...

Student perspective: Catholic universities must embrace discussion on sex and reproductive health

Ed. note: Last week Feministing Editors visited Georgetown University to talk about sexual assault and reproductive health on college campuses. This is a guest post relating to those topics from Morgan McDaniel, who is currently a senior at Georgetown and who helped organize the events. She is the former vice president of H*yas for Choice.

I go to a Catholic university, and everyone knows what that means.  The student health center cannot give out contraception.  Student groups cannot openly advocate for abortion rights.  Instead of an open, honest conversation around safe sex, there’s an awkward silence.

What everyone might not think about is how this attitude towards reproductive health affects another huge issue on college campuses – sexual assault.  ...

UNC students walk to class

UNC purposefully underreported sexual assault cases

Last month, students at the Chapel Hill campus of the University of North Carolina went public with stories of sexual assault and their school’s mishandling of their reports. The activists have now filed Title IX and Clery Act complaints with the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, and the contents are damning.

As one signatory’s experiences shows, UNC’s failure to respond to student violence is clearly not just a matter of indifference but an active public relations strategy. Writes the Daily Tarheel:

The complaint alleges [complainants and former assistant dean of students Melinda] Manning was told by the University Counsel’s office that the number of sexual assault cases she compiled for 2010 was “too high” before the total was ...
