Chris Brown is the poster child for intimate partner violence

Chris Brown was 19 years old that day in 2009 when the world learned of his beating Rihanna. That was part of the defense offered, free of charge, from his fans and others eager to not discuss intimate partner violence and abuse.

Colombian police kills boy, protects Justin Bieber, for graffiti

When 16-year-old Colombian Diego Felipe Becerra was “caught” painting graffiti in Bogota, Colombia, the police shot him to death. When Justin Bieber wanted to grace a tunnel in the same city with his inane graffiti, the police escorted and protected him.

Chris Brown’s latest revelation is about rape, which is not “vaguely traumatic”

I loathe to talk about Chris Brown, but if the most recent story about him is going to be a story it’s important that we discuss it correctly. What Brown describes in his interview with the Guardian is rape. There is no escaping that. Look at the words on the page:

He lost his virginity when he was eight years old, to a local girl who was 14 or 15. Seriously? “Yeah, really. Uh-huh.” He grins and chuckles. “It’s different in the country.” Brown grew up with a great gang of boy cousins, and they watched so much porn that he was raring to go. “By that point, we were already kind of like hot to trot, you ...

Why are we still talking about Chris Brown?

A more discerning adult can look at this twitterclusterfuckerfuffle to see that a) Jenny Johnson, a comedian I never heard of, baited Chris Brown and b) dull witted and unremorseful Chris Brown fired back in a language he’s most comfortable with: misogyny. And yes, this all stopped being news because many of us have already called him on his deep misogyny, his violent assault of Rihanna in 2009, his caustic unapologetic behavior since the offense. And yes, he deleted his twitter page (10 second dance party for that). Yet a chorus of furies emblazoned with the hashtag teambreezy surface at his defense. And yes, this current backlash against Chris Brown has some racial under and overtones because his vitriol was ...

Did Chris Brown get a tattoo of a battered woman’s face?

I’m so sick of writing about Chris Brown. I’m sick of constantly having to explain to victim blamers that Chris Brown was too quickly forgiven and Rihanna, his victim, was too quickly blamed for her assault.

But now, hopefully, folks will once and for all view Chris Brown as the awful person he is. Brown has decided that an image of a battered woman (which looks a lot like Rihanna’s now infamous police picture) would make a great neck tattoo. Now leaving open the possibility that this could be a publicity stunt, Brown’s tasteless choice really should let those holding out hope that he is reformed know exactly where he stands.

Brown doesn’t appear to be reformed, remorseful, or ...

Youth dating violence impacting even younger teens

Over a decade ago we learned it was young people (age 16-24) that endured the highest rates of dating violence which catapulted a variety of programs in an effort to decrease the disastrous rates with which young people were experiencing intimate partner violence. Ten years later it appears little has changed. The Center for Disease Control found that today 1 in 10 teenagers still experience dating violence. And some research suggests that teens as young as 11 and 12 have experienced dating violence.

According to the New York Times, this new data has caused many intervention programs to target even younger youth–educating those as young as 11 about the impacts of teen dating violence.

Esta Soler, president of Futures Without Violence, a ...

2012 Grammy Awards marred by Chris Brown performance

The 2012 Grammys had some wonderful moments. Jennifer Hudson performing “I Will Always Love You” as a tribute to the late Whitney Houston had me tearing up. Adele had her glorious and well-deserved moment in the spotlight (her performance of “Rolling in the Deep” was amazing and her acceptance speech for Album of the Year was particularly adorable).  Robyn wore this.

But my entire Grammy’s experience was marred by the fact that Chris Brown was allowed not only to attend, but perform at the Grammys just three years after a  publicly known domestic violence incident.

It is absolutely unacceptable that someone who is known to have perpetuated violence against a woman has been so uncritically welcomed and ...

Quick Hit: Samhita on Chris Brown, Steve Harvey, and dating advice

Chris Brown, who famously beat his then-girlfriend Rihanna, has been cast as the male lead in the film adaptation of Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, the dating advice book by Steve Harvey, who is currently being charged with emotional abuse as part of divorce proceedings.

Over at AlterNet our very own Executive Editor Samhita takes on this casting decision and the links between the dating advice industry and intimate partner violence. Here’s an excerpt:

The reality of intimate partner violence doesn’t exactly make good fodder for the fluffy idealism of romantic comedies. Intimate partner violence is an epidemic. Although overall rates of IPV have gone down in the last 20 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control, ...
