Harsher punishment won’t keep kids safe from sexual abuse: the death penalty in India

When rape makes the headlines in India, talk of hanging begins. Commentators blare from news screens; politicians pledge death. These stories of brutal crime and brutal punishment, all in the name of protecting women and girls, tell us something  important about contemporary Indian responses to rape. They also tell us about a fundamental flaw in our thinking about sexual violence and punishment across contexts: a mistaken idea that the primary threat to women and children is from the “outside” or the “stranger” rather than our own homes.

U.N. goes IN on the Vatican: Criticizes handling of sexual abuse cases, abortion, and contraception

The Vatican was the target of quite a scolding from a United Nations human rights committee.

According to the Associated Press, the Vatican “‘systematically’ adopted policies that allowed priests to rape and molest tens of thousands of children over decades, a U.N. human rights committee said Wednesday, urging the Holy See to open its files on pedophiles and bishops who concealed their crimes.”

Mia and Ronan Farrow say what we were all thinking about Woody Allen

In case you missed it, last night, the Hollywood Foreign Press presented Woody Allen with the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award in absentia. Allen’s ex Mia Farrow tweeted appropriate shade just minutes before long-time friend Diane Keaton extolled the virtues of the director in a lengthy and weird acceptance speech.

Allen, if you recall, is married to Farrow’s adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn (a relationship that began while Allen and Farrow were together and Soon-Yi was just 19) and has been accused of molesting his adopted 7-year-old daughter “Dylan” in 1992, a story confirmed by her in the October 2013 Vanity Fair issue. Allen denies these accusations.
