Curtis Boyd and his wife Glenna Halvorson-Boyd

Quote of the Day: “They don’t wake up and say, ‘I’ll brush my teeth and go have an abortion.'”

“These women who come to us are not idiots. They know what they are doing. People can’t get that. Women take this seriously. They think about it. They don’t wake up and say, ‘I’ll brush my teeth and go have an abortion.'” – Dr. Curtis Boyd

Alabama’s admitting privileges law was struck down, but it’s still terrifying to be an abortion provider

On Monday, an Alabama district court blocked the admitting privileges law that would have closed three out of the state’s five abortion clinics. Coming right on the heels of the court smackdown of Mississippi’s similar law, the decision is another heartening blow to the anti-choice strategy of regulating clinics out of existence. The judge was crystal clear: “If this requirement would not, in the face of all the evidence in the record, constitute an impermissible undue burden, then almost no regulation, short of those imposing an outright prohibition on abortion, would.”

But, to play the feminist buzzkill role for a second, the case–in which the few abortion providers in Alabama testified behind black curtains to conceal ...

Texas finally let Marlise Muñoz be taken off life support

A Texas state district judge has ruled that a state law was wrongly applied in the case of Marlise Muñoz, allowing her to be taken off life support. We’ve written before about Muñoz, who has been brain dead since November but was pregnant at the time of her death and was kept alive by the county-owned John Peter Smith Hospital, citing a Texas law that says they cannot withdraw “life sustaining-support… for a pregnant patient.” This decision was backed by local lawmakers, despite Muñoz’s clear wishes, expressed to her husband, not to be kept on life support.

Quick hit: Anti-choicers split on Medicaid expansion

Anti-choice organizations seem to be split on their support of the Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, which expands access to health care for the poorest Americans. Putting aside that abortion care actually is health care (despite the highly unjust restriction on federal funding of abortion care), it seems that the more extreme anti-choice organizations in particular are not very excited about expanding general access to health care for the poor.

“It will be like having a doll in my arms”

Good morning, and welcome to the worst story you’ve read all day even though it’s only 9am.

Earlier this week, we covered the story of the 11-year-old Chilean girl who is pregnant as a result of rape by her mother’s partner, and who is being denied an abortion because they’re not legal in Chile, even in cases of rape, incest, and to save the mother’s life. This case ticks all three of those boxes.

Raw Story reported yesterday that Chilean President Sebastian Pinera is praising the “maturity” of this little girl because she will not seek an illegal abortion. Everything about this story makes my heart hurt:

The conservative president of Chile praised an 11-year-old girl’s “depth ...

Quote of the Day: Shooting abortion providers “will be a blessing to the babies”

In a recording posted to YouTube, Iowa anti-choice activist Dave Leach says that it would a “blessing to the babies” if someone shot the brave folks who recently re-opened Dr. George Tiller’s former abortion clinic in Wichita, Kansas.

“If someone would shoot the new abortionists, like Scott shot George Tiller, … hardly anyone will appreciate it but the babies. It will be a blessing to the babies. Everyone else will panic. Of all places to open up a killing office, to reopen the one office in the United States more notorious for decades than any other is an act of defiance against God and the last remaining reverence for human life.”

The recording is all the more chilling since Leach ...

Psst, anti-choicers! Your real agenda is showing!

What did you do this weekend? Did you attend a rally to protest the Obama administration’s infringement on religious liberty? Probably not. Because even if you did go to Friday’s Stand Up for Religious Freedom rally in Washington, D.C., that’s not what that rally was about.

Yes, I know, it has “religious freedom” in the title, but that’s a front. It’s not about religious freedom; it’s about contraception and the evils it has wrought on our culture. Evils like education and careers for women, bodily autonomy, and sex for pure pleasure.

At Salon, the wonderful Sarah Posner has profiled some of the people behind Friday’s rally, including David Bereit, co-founder of 40 Days for Life. Here’s what Bereit has to ...

Undercover anti-choicers use sex-selective abortion in attempt to discredit Planned Parenthood

It seems that anti-choice zealot Lila Rose and her team at Live Action may be at it again. You’ll no doubt remember that last year the conservative “sting” operation “uncovered” the horrifying fact that Planned Parenthood provides health information and services to sex trafficking victims. Now a string of similar incidents suggests the focus of Live Action’s next video may be sex-selective abortion. The Huffington Post report:

According to Planned Parenthood spokesperson Chloe Cooney, clinics in at least 11 states have reported two dozen or more “hoax visits” over the past several weeks, in which a woman walks into a clinic, claims to be pregnant and asks a particular pattern of provocative questions about sex-selective abortions, such as how ...
