None of this is normal

After the shooting at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs this weekend, President Obama said, “This is not normal. We can’t let it become normal.” He was specifically pleading — yet again — for the nation to not accept another instance of mass gun violence.

Bill Nye the Science Guy

Quote of the Day: Bill Nye schools anti-choicers on science

In a Big Think video entitled “Can We Stop Telling Women What to Do With Their Bodies?” a visibly frustrated Bill Nye the Science Guy valiently tries to convince anti-choicers who insist that a fertizilized egg is a full human being to respect science.

The conservative attacks on Planned Parenthood just keep coming. Using the Center for Medical Progress’s undercover videos — the third of which was released today — as their excuse, anti-choicers in Congress have renewed their long-time goal of defunding the organization, fast-tracking a bill to do so last week.

Curtis Boyd and his wife Glenna Halvorson-Boyd

Quote of the Day: “They don’t wake up and say, ‘I’ll brush my teeth and go have an abortion.'”

“These women who come to us are not idiots. They know what they are doing. People can’t get that. Women take this seriously. They think about it. They don’t wake up and say, ‘I’ll brush my teeth and go have an abortion.'” – Dr. Curtis Boyd

Alabama’s admitting privileges law was struck down, but it’s still terrifying to be an abortion provider

On Monday, an Alabama district court blocked the admitting privileges law that would have closed three out of the state’s five abortion clinics. Coming right on the heels of the court smackdown of Mississippi’s similar law, the decision is another heartening blow to the anti-choice strategy of regulating clinics out of existence. The judge was crystal clear: “If this requirement would not, in the face of all the evidence in the record, constitute an impermissible undue burden, then almost no regulation, short of those imposing an outright prohibition on abortion, would.”

But, to play the feminist buzzkill role for a second, the case–in which the few abortion providers in Alabama testified behind black curtains to conceal ...

Texas finally let Marlise Muñoz be taken off life support

A Texas state district judge has ruled that a state law was wrongly applied in the case of Marlise Muñoz, allowing her to be taken off life support. We’ve written before about Muñoz, who has been brain dead since November but was pregnant at the time of her death and was kept alive by the county-owned John Peter Smith Hospital, citing a Texas law that says they cannot withdraw “life sustaining-support… for a pregnant patient.” This decision was backed by local lawmakers, despite Muñoz’s clear wishes, expressed to her husband, not to be kept on life support.

Quick hit: Anti-choicers split on Medicaid expansion

Anti-choice organizations seem to be split on their support of the Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, which expands access to health care for the poorest Americans. Putting aside that abortion care actually is health care (despite the highly unjust restriction on federal funding of abortion care), it seems that the more extreme anti-choice organizations in particular are not very excited about expanding general access to health care for the poor.
