Trans woman attacked in McDonalds bathroom

A trans woman is attacked in a McDonalds bathroom, and beaten by two women as McDonalds employee’s watch. One employee and a customer attempt to help, but the attackers do not stop until the woman is having a seizure on the floor. At this point, the attackers are urged [by employees] to flee because the cops are arriving.Baltimore, MD.

The incident was caught on camera and it is horribly violent [TRIGGER WARNING]. Unfortunately it is not at all uncommon. I feel the need to share it to show what trans people deal with when all we want to do is pee.

Here is the video footage: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ec0_1303444048

Topside Press

The recent post about “I Am J” inspired me to share with everyone at Feministing about a new small press, Topside Press, and their current call for submissions.

Here is the information from the site:

Seeking short works: Book-length collection of transgender literary fiction

Deadline: August 31, 2011

Topside Press seeks short literary fiction for its debut title, to be published in late 2011. The collection will feature work by transgender authors and/or work featuring transgender protagonists. While there is no strict theme, the goal of this collection is to showcase fiction by and about transgender people and culture. The book hopes to reflect the diversity of trans experience; all people are encouraged to participate.

“Straight Male Gamer” told to ‘get over it’ by BioWare

The gaming company BioWare gives a complaining gamer a lesson on male privilege!

I can’t say it better than the Blog No More Lost so this is a repost of that entry:

BioWare adopted a (sadly) very special and very principled stance in designing one of their recent games, Dragon Age 2. Their stance was simple: relationships are for everybody, whether gay, straight, or anything else in between. You can also have have more than one romance at a time with the game’s characters. In this game, everybody is equal. Too equal, it seems, for one particular straight male gamer who was upset to be on the receiving end of a little  flirting from another male character in the game. The ...

Intersectionality and Trans Rights

I really want to share this video because it’s a fantastic discussion of intersectionality and discrimination. A transgender woman of color discusses a radio program in which white cisgender  gay people talk about the right of transgender people to change their birth certificates. It’s also a FANTASTIC presentation of why this issue of birth certificates is important. I can’t figure out how to embed the video in this post, so here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTBhaIpqa7M

Feministing is not in the United States

I feel the need to point out something obvious to me that seems to allude many Feministing readers, particularly those who live in a certain geographic region. And that is that Feministing is not in the U.S. It is on the internet. The internet is accessed and enjoyed by people living all over the world. Feministing.com has a global “fan base” if you will. It is an international community.

However, the members of our community who live in the U.S. frequently forget this. The comments sections are filled with assumptions about topics and posters (particularly in the Community part of the site) that are US-biased. What finally gave me the push to stand up and shout “Yoo Hoo” were the comments ...
