A Response to Guyland

A Student Response to Guyland

A woman, a white woman, at a feminist book discussion, once opined that all women, of all walks of life, have a common experience of female oppression. As the room nodded in agreement, one woman, a black woman, stood up, and said, ‘Well, no. What do you see when you look in the mirror in the morning?’. The white woman said, ‘a woman’. The black woman responded, ‘When I look in the mirror, I see a black woman. When you see just a woman, and don’t see your race, that’s what privilege is’. The one man in the room, meanwhile, had an epiphany- when he looked in the mirror, he saw ‘a person’. It was that day that that man ceased to be ‘a person’, and became a middle-class white man. That middle class white man was Michael Kimmel, professor of sociology.

The Problem with Demi and Ashton

As I walked into the dining center today, I was asked to take a picture with a sign that said, ‘Real Men Don’t Buy Girls’- a sign that, I later found out, is for the Demi and Ashton foundation, against human trafficking and sex work. Being the feminist I am, I obliged immediately- taking only a moment to flinch at the posters nearby, showing various actresses holding the same sign, and the caption that said ‘[Name of actress] prefers real men’.

A man against MRAs

I’m a man, and I’m against ‘men’s rights activists’.

I see these blokes all over the internet; I can’t get away from them. Whenever I see a video of my female friends and neighbors at a rally or an event, or read any article that mentions gender, I’ve come to expect the invective and bile of the MRAs, talking about how women have usurped all of our power through feminism and cultural left-wingers and male pro-feminists like me are sort of anti-male fifth column bent on destroying manhood (possibly in some sort of scheme to ‘get laid by the feminazis’- I kid you not, I have been so accused).

Guys? Can we talk? Give me a break.

The idea that women have somehow ...

Police brutality induces miscarriage? Better blame the victim!

Those of you who have been following the Occupy protests have probably heard about the recent incident in Portland, where Jennifer Fox, a 19-year-old young woman in Seattle, suffered a miscarriage after being beaten and sprayed by the police. On November 15th, at the Occupy protest, Fox, who is homeless, was assaulted by the police, receiving kicks to her stomach and pepper spray directly into her face even while trying to tell the police that she was pregnant. She was seen later that day being carried while in extreme pain by another Occupier. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors found the fetus to be healthy, but several days later she began to experience pains again. According to Fox, ...

Regarding ‘Nice Guys’ and ‘Why Women Only Date Jerks’- A Critique of a Masculine Victim-Cult

I’d like to start by saying, yes, I know feminists have already written about this–but it needs to be said again. I wrote this very quickly, so be warned. This is in response to this picture, which has been circulating.

I think there are some great answers to this lying around somewhere, but I’ll try to answer with some basic points; I don’t have a lot of time to lay the groundwork of theory and whatnot here and have some lengthy introduction, so I’ll jump right to it.

First, don’t assume that all women are the same or that women’s judgement of men is anything but rational and sensible; erase the conception that women are just crazy, open yourself to self-criticism, ...

The Nuclear Family Didn’t Stop Me From Becoming a Leftist Degenerate

Watching TV here on spring break tonight with my dad, I came across a show with a preacher on it, saying that ‘if America could somehow re-establish the family, then Christian values would be restored in this country’.

I couldn’t help but laugh.

I was born into a traditional family. A very traditional family. My father runs a farm, and my mother was a homemaker. How was it, that I ended up a revolutionary democratic socialist, feminist, environmentalist, pro-GLBT, pro-free-love, anti-racist atheist?

Were my parents just radicals? Well, neither of my parents is anti-capitalist, I never asked my mom about feminism, and my dad insists that ‘men and women are just different’, and I’ve always gotten the feeling that my parents grudgingly became ...

A Man’s Testimonial For Planned Parenthood

I come from central Minnesota, near the city of Saint Cloud. It’s a largely Catholic and Lutheran place, with some Muslims since the arrival of many east African immigrants, some Jews, some Buddhists, pagans, and other religions, and some atheists, like myself. Having grown up with these people, I can tell you that, whatever our differences, we have one thing in come- we have sex.

People are going to have sex. Whether they’re Christian or atheist or Muslim or what have you, there’s a wide gap between what the socially conventional dogma of marital, missionary reproductive sex is, and the sex that we, as humans, have- the sex that we’ve been having since long before the sexual revolution let us talk ...

Manifesto of a Country Man

I’m a farm boy- I had my first work when I was less than ten, I grew and sold my first crop around that same time, I’ve never had a job that wasn’t in agriculture or forestry, and I’ll be damned if I’m anything but a farm boy. So much so, that while the dreams of so many rural kids is to get to the cities, I’m majoring in environmental studies and biology the university not two or three mile as the crow flies from my house, aiming for graduate school in agronomy at the U of M.

Yessir, I’m a country man, and like every man in America, I’m beset by the expectations of my gender role- in the case ...
