Video of the Day: Amy Schumer’s “Size 12”

Amy Schumer’s hit TV show Inside Amy Schumer returned a couple of weeks ago with an incisive sketch about purchasing guns. While Schumer certainly has her short comings, she is at her best when she critiques society based on her experience as a (white, cisgender, heterosexual) woman. In her most recent episode, she tackles the difficulties of shopping by attempting to purchase a shirt in a size 12 and all the body shaming that comes with it.

At one point she is led into a back room — an open field complete with a cow grazing and Lena Dunham, who just wanted a turtleneck, wearing a poncho.

Body politics have been staples of Schumer’s comedy. Her infamous line while accepting the Glamour Trailblazer Award about being 160 pounds and being able “to catch a dick” whenever she wanted nearly broke the internet. She has also called out Glamour for labeling her as plus sized when, in her words, she fluctuates “between a size 6 and 8.”

Check out the full sketch below.

Katie Barnes (they/them/their) is a pop-culture obsessed activist and writer. While at St. Olaf College studying History and (oddly) Russian (among other things), Katie fell in love with politics, and doing the hard work in the hard places. A retired fanfiction writer, Katie now actually enjoys writing with their name attached. Katie actually loves cornfields, and thinks there is nothing better than a summer night's drive through the Indiana countryside. They love basketball and are a huge fan of the UConn women's team. When not fighting the good fight, you can usually find Katie watching sports, writing, or reading a good book.
