Kerry Washington: “Abortion Is a Reality”

Kerry Washington talked politics in an interview with WWD this week. Reflecting on her character Olivia Pope’s abortion on Scandal last year, she asserted, “[Abortion is] a reality,” and spoke eloquently to the importance of media representation as a tactic for combating stigma:

By not having those moments represented in media, we add to the idea that there’s something shameful to be talked about. It’s always important that our storytelling reflects the real experiences of human beings, because it allows us to not feel as alone.

Washington went on to speak about how the personal is political, the political personal. “Politics are not this abstract idea. Laws are the rules that dictate how we live our lives. What we eat is political. How we dress is political. Where we live is political.”

Snaps to that. You can check out the rest of the interview here.
