WATCH: Daniel Holtzclaw found GUILTY of 18 of 36 Rape and assault Charges

Yesterday, Dana recounted a powerful quote coming out of the ongoing trial of Daniel Holtzclaw.

“What kind of police do you call on the police?”

This was spoken by one of the Holtzclaw’s victims, who was only 17 when he raped her. Holtzclaw is a former Oklahoma City police officer who was charged with preying upon, assaulting and raping 13 Black women. This question is heavily laced with desperation and frustration with a violent, militarized police force and a justice system that so often allows this violence to go unchecked.

But today, this woman might experience some solace. On his 29th birthday, a jury found Holtzclaw guilty of 18 of the 36 rape and assault charges brought against him. Watch as the judge reads the verdicts.

I’ve never been so happy to see someone cry.

glo Merriweather, anti-police violence activist targeted by police, goes free

“My life is currently in the hands of the state,” glo Merriweather, a black trans and queer activist based in Charlotte, North Carolina, told me a few months ago. They were fighting for their freedom after being criminalized for protesting in the wake of the police murder of Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte in 2016.

glo’s trial was set to begin this week. Only a few weeks ago, Mecklenburg District Attorney’s office dropped all charges against glo. But while glo is now free, state repression against black liberation activists in Charlotte continues, and glo’s reflections—on their case, state violence and the role of feminism in all of it—are as essential ...
