Watch: Michael Sam and his boyfriend find out he’s become the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL

As Courtney mentioned in the Reader yesterday,  Michael Sam became the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL this weekend. Here’s a heartwarming video of Sam and his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, receiving the call from the St. Louis Rams.

Watching athletes overcome with emotion is always guaranteed to make me tear up. Throw in some public displays of queer love and it’s a winning recipe for a Monday morning cry. Predictably, the kiss brought out some homophobes but hey, it’s nice to have them out where we can see them.

Before become a full-time journalist, she worked at the National Institute for Reproductive Health. A Minnesota native, she received her B.A. from Carleton College in 2008. After living in Brooklyn, Oakland, and Atlanta, she is currently based in the Twin Cities.
