Map of the Day: Texas’s disappearing abortion clinics

As the extreme anti-choice restrictions passed last year in Texas continue to force clinics to shut their doors, RH Reality Check has put together a map tracking the closures. 

Thirteen clinics (represented by the red icons) have closed, leaving the Rio Grande Valley and large swaths of West Texas without a provider for hundreds of miles. Check back there for updates.

And just in case it still wasn’t clear enough just how far rural Texans now need to travel for abortion care, here’s how the size of Texas compares to all of Europe.

Maya Dusenbery is executive director in charge of editorial at Feministing. She is the author of the forthcoming book Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick (HarperOne, March 2018). She has been a fellow at Mother Jones magazine and a columnist at Pacific Standard magazine. Before become a full-time journalist, she worked at the National Institute for Reproductive Health. A Minnesota native, she received her B.A. from Carleton College in 2008.
