Domestic violence survivor: “I was shot with my own gun.”

Despite what conservatives want people to think, as I’ve written before, guns are not rape prevention tools, and they also make it more dangerous for people who are suffering at the hands of the domestic abuser. Statistics show that guns don’t make you safer in domestic abuse situations. They actually have the opposite effect: abusers who have access to a gun are seven times more likely to kill their partners.

Michigan laws will block unemployment benefits for failed drug test

Over at theGrio.com, I reported today that Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has just signed into law a new package of laws that allow business to report failed drug tests that job seekers submit as part of the interview process. Job seekers who fail or refuse mandatory drug tests will have their unemployment benefits blocked.

Instead of freedom, Marissa Alexander gets new trial date

Marissa Alexander, the black Florida mother who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a warning shot against her abusive husband, will get a new trial this spring. But her supporters were calling for the charges to be dropped altogether.

As we’ve previously covered, Alexander had a restraining order against her husband when he yelled, “Bitch, I will kill you!” and charged toward her during the incident in 2010. She fired a single shot into the ceiling, and no one was hurt. The sentence Alexander received would seem absurdly harsh in general, but especially since we’re talking about Florida here, where the right to “stand your ground” apparently applies to aggressors ...

Hawaii on its way to becoming the 15th state with marriage equality

Last night the state’s Senate passed the bill and it’s headed to the House of Representatives today.

The 20-4 vote in favor of the bill, with three Democrats joining the state Senate’s lone Republican to oppose the measure, came two days after the start of a special session called by Democratic Governor Neil Abercrombie to take up the legislation. One senator was absent for the vote.

If the bill is approved, as expected, by the state House of Representatives – where Democrats outnumber Republicans 44-7 – Hawaii would become the 15th vote to make it legal for gay and lesbian couples to wed.
