Clear eyes, full hearts, cast Connie Britton in the Wendy Davis biopic already

Last night’s filibuster in Texas makes a powerful feminist narrative. It’s the story of Wendy Davis, the inspirational figurehead. But it’s also the story of a broader movement, a feminist army that rose up in Texas and had Davis’ back the whole time. I so want that to be a movie. And of course Wendy Davis would have to be played by Tammy Taylor herself, Connie Britton. So I made this:

The feminist army just defeated a massive anti-choice bill. We can totally make this happen.

BREAKING: DOMA is DEAD!

DOMA is unconstitutional! The AP reports:

The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that legally married same-sex couples should get the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples.

The court invalidated a provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act that has prevented married gay couples from receiving a range of tax, health and retirement benefits that are generally available to married people. The vote was 5-4.

Also Wednesday, the Supreme Court cleared the way for same-sex marriage in California by holding that defenders of California’s gay marriage ban did not have the right to appeal lower court rulings striking down the ban.

The court’s 5-4 vote Wednesday leaves in place the initial trial court declaration that the ban is unconstitutional. California officials probably will rely ...

Here’s the moment the Texas anti-choice bill was officially declared dead

It came after a long and nerve-wracking night, after the Republicans literally tried to win by cheating while thousands of people watched. It came thanks to an epic filibuster by hero state Senator Wendy Davis, an amazing take-down by state Senator Leticia Van de Putte, and, above all, the truly inspiring commitment of hundreds of pro-choice Texan activists.

Update: Closer up video from Jessica Luther here.

What an amazing and well-earned victory to witness.

Feminist Texans are rising up and it’s amazing. A Senate filibuster is currently underway against an anti-choice bill that would close almost all abortion clinics in the state. Livestream video is above via the Texas Tribune, and you can follow #TXlege and #SB5 on the Twitters for updates.

The Supreme Court has made life easier for workplace harassers and harder for folks claiming harassment.

A cis Black woman was told she had to undergo a vaginal exam because the gender marker on her ID was wrong. Cis Black women are often targeted by having their gender questioned, and this is an example of how cissexism impacts a broader group than just trans folks.

Supreme Court strikes down key section of the Voting Rights Act

The Supreme Court today struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which determines which states must have their approach to voting cleared by the federal government. These states have a bad track record with with people of color and non-English speakers’ rights to vote. From Colorlines:

The currently covered areas are places that historically have disenfranchised people of color, or those for whom English is their second language. But Chief Justice John Roberts has ruled that the formula, which was last updated in the late 1960s-early 1970s, must be updated by Congress so that it covers areas that violate voting rights today. Chief Roberts, who’s had a beef with the Voting Rights Act since the early 1980s, wrote in ...

New investigative video shows a crisis pregnancy center counselor telling a client dangerous lies

Katie Stack was disturbed when she got pregnant and visited a clinic close by that turned out to be a crisis pregnancy center, facilities that try to look like abortion clinics that exist to talk people out of accessing abortions. Katie was lied to about her own health, as happens to so many young people. This experience inspired her to investigate these misleading fake clinics:

Though she had an appointment at a Planned Parenthood clinic for an abortion, she visited an Iowa clinic closer to her home. “ The “counseling” that I received included the following,” Stack wrote in a 2011 New York Times Op-Ed. “I was cautioned that abortions caused breast cancer, even though the National Cancer Institute has found serious flaws in ...

Fat Girls are still being ignored by fashion companies

Last week fashion columnist Christina Binkley made a video that appeared on the Wall Street Journal. She had some very telling things to say about plus sized clothing being positioned on the margins of the fashion industry.

“’Young fashion lovers have been demanding at an almost revolutionary pace, they have been screaming, “We want fashion, we want short shorts and miniskirts and all the trendy looks.”‘ And bluntly enough, she asserted that one of the main reasons that a lot of fashion companies don’t bite is because they ‘don’t want to be associated with ‘fat.’”

She’s absolutely correct. The truth is, consumers of plus sized fashion are already spending more money on clothes than our thinner peers.
