Disney gives Brave‘s Merida a princess make-over

Brave princess before and afterFor fuck’s sake. Brave‘s heroine Merida is getting a make-over before she’s officially inducted into the Disney Princess collection. The character’s creator Brenda Chapman, who became the first woman to win an Oscar for an animated feature for the film, said Disney should be ashamed of the decision. “It’s horrible! Merida was created to break that mold — to give young girls a better, stronger role model, a more attainable role model, something of substance, not just a pretty face that waits around for romance.”

while i understand that it is counterproductive for disney to feel the need to beautify or sexify all of their princesses, and that doing so promotes unrealistic and narrow conceptions of beauty, i don’t understand how merida’s makeover prevents her from being a “better, stronger role model,…something of substance.” her appearance doesn’t change the fact that she’s a headstrong, arrow slinging badass who takes her fate into her own hands. being pretty doesn’t mean she waits around for romance. also, it’s not like she’s wearing a tartan bikini. if anything, the updated version looks less computer animated and a few years older, 20 instead of 16. as always, i could be wrong. if so, please tell me. i am open to other points of view
