Quick hit: Visualize women’s political rights around the world

In honor of International Women’s Day this Friday March 8, Lizzie Malcolm of @LUSTlab created this cool data-visualization. The site offers three different “map modes” which show global data by country from 1892 all the way through 2012 according to three different factors: the right to vote, the right to stand for election, and the first woman elected. You can also click on any country to view a kind of women’s political rights snapshot for that area, including info on their laws against domestic violence, sexual harassment, and marital rape. I can’t vouch for every single piece of data used — the “About” page cites the Guardian Data blog, Wikipedia, and “the Internet” as sources — but it seems to get the general trajectory right and is certainly a cool way to watch things change for women’s political rights over time.
