Want to write for Feministing? Want to be the next Lori Adelman, or the next Zerlina Maxwell? Want to join one of the most read and most respected feminist commentary teams on the internet? Want to make the world a fiercer, funnier, more feminist place? This is the chance you’ve been waiting for.

Feministing is looking for a new Contributor. We’re looking for someone to join the Feministing team and blog for us once a week — someone who’s smart, funny, insightful, reliable, and raring to go. To that end, we’re holding a little contest.

Here’s how it’s going to work.

Next week, contestants who want to be considered must write two blog posts on the Community blog between Monday the 20th and Friday the 25th. Each of them should say “A SYTYCB entry” at the top and include the SYTYCB logo. Then, the Feministing team will pick several finalists, and those finalists will have another chance to show us their stuff before we pick a winner. It’s just like So You Think You Can Dance, except we don’t care how many fouettées you can do.

A few tips before you start:

- be timely

- be clear and to the point

- don’t be afraid of pictures or videos, but if you’re going to post video, please include a transcript

- show us your versatility – try to write about a range of issues. But don’t force it: if you diddly squat about pop culture, don’t feel obliged to write about pop culture.

- get your community involved! We’ll be having a look at the comments section to get a sense of how readers respond to you, so encourage your friends to come to the site and support you

The usual rules of the Community blog apply: racism, classism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and hate speech constitute anti-feminism and have no place on the site.  Additionally, posts that contain no feminist lens or analysis won’t be posted. To post on the Community blog you first need to register (go to the My Feministing tab in the upper righthand corner of the site).

We’re all so excited to hear from you. We know there are lots of smart aspiring feminist bloggers out there, and we can’t wait to read what you have to say. So get cracking!

Thanks to the amazing Patrick Sheehan for the logo.

    Are there any length requirements?

    • Posted August 16, 2012 at 3:02 pm | Permalink

      Hi Carly,

There are no official length requirements, but this is definitely a case where longer does not necessarily equal better! We’re looking for readability and quality.

      Thanks for your interest :)

I’m interested in entering, but I have a question. Could I enter a piece I’ve written for my own blog, or does it have to be brand new?

      I’m also curious about this…

        Hi Genie and Stefanie,

submissions that have previously been published elsewhere are eligible, but remember that we will be judging in part based on timeliness and freshness of the content. Looking forward to reading your posts!

It’s funny that a feminist site would not include the word sexism in its list of what won’t be tolerated. Is that an oversight? Has sexism been vanquished? Or is the word passe? I’ve noticed this alot. Racism, classism, ableism are all named, but sexism is often left out. Why is that?

    • Posted August 16, 2012 at 11:29 pm | Permalink

Maybe because Feministing thought anyone entering the contest would take the anti-sexism rule as a given, so they mention other -isms to acknowledge that the site is interested in addressing inter-sectional discrimination? I don’t know, just a guess. I’d really like the site to clear it up.

I would love to contribute! I was wondering if there’s any payment for the winning submissions? (It’s ok if there isn’t, but being an aspiring writer I try to keep an eye open for opportunities to get paid for writing.)

    • Posted August 16, 2012 at 6:27 pm | Permalink

Great question. Feministing’s currently a labor of love, with the biggest perk being the huge increase in visibility. Long time contributors and editors get year end bonuses but no regular paychecks. We’re working really hard to change that and would love the new contributor’s help :)

I forgot to mention that in addition to providing access to a platform that reaches hundreds of thousands of readers, being a contributor also helps facilitate other paid writing gigs, as well as an opportunity to be part of our college tour, which is paid.

Is there an age requirement? I’m 17 and I want to enter this!

  6. Posted August 16, 2012 at 11:25 pm | Permalink

    I. Die.

Do you only submit two blogs, or is two just the minimum number of blogs?

  8. Posted August 17, 2012 at 8:41 am | Permalink

I was just at the community blog and don’t see how to begin a new post. Can someone help me with that logistical detail? Thanks! :)

I am trying to submit but am new to Word Press and am having a hard time inserting the logo. I am sure there is something simple I am overlooking…advice please?

  10. Posted August 17, 2012 at 4:46 pm | Permalink

Shoot! I only inserted the logo in one my posts! Is there a way for me to edit my other post so I can add the logo?

    • Posted August 19, 2012 at 12:15 pm | Permalink

You should be able to go back in and edit posts that are still Drafts. If you can’t still edit the post an editor should fix the formatting, as long as the post at least says it’s a SYTYCB entry. I added the logo to your entry that already published. That post should have gone up Monday when the contest began, but don’t worry about that since publishing the post was on our team.

Is 2 entries a strict requirement or just a minimum number?

  12. Posted August 19, 2012 at 11:57 pm | Permalink

Hey is the logo absolutely needed for the submissions? I put “A SYTYCB entry” in the title, but when I copy and paste the logo and save the draft, my whole piece disappears on me. Am I doing something wrong? Is it okay if I leave it out?

  13. Posted August 20, 2012 at 12:06 pm | Permalink

I also couldn’t get the logo added to my post. For some reason, my add new post page wasn’t even showing an “upload/insert media” button or option anywhere. But I still put “A SYTYCB entry.”

  14. Posted August 20, 2012 at 6:05 pm | Permalink

Struggling to insert the logo as there doesn’t seem to be an insert media button,I am sure as someone else said I am just missing something obvious.

  15. Posted August 21, 2012 at 4:30 am | Permalink

How long does it take something to be approved, as submitted something last night and do not want to add a new post until I am sure I did everything right, technically at least . I am aware there may be time difference issues.

  16. Posted August 21, 2012 at 7:21 pm | Permalink

I am also having trouble inserting the logo–help anyone? Thanks!

    • Posted August 22, 2012 at 12:02 pm | Permalink

I can’t insert images! There are no “insert image” buttons that are usually there! How is everyone else putting images in!?

      • Posted August 23, 2012 at 5:53 pm | Permalink

For inserting graphics, including the logo, I discovered it had to be done under HTML rather than the Visual tap on WordPress. When you go under the HTML tab you’ll see a button for image, which I believe is “img” and then the form pops up to put in your URL.

I submitted my first blog post about 1 pm EST and was waiting until that one was approved, before submitting my second. When I submitted it, it said Pending approval or some such phrase. Two questions:
    1. How long does review process typically take and
    2. Will I receive an email informing me or do I need to keep looking for it on the Community Site?

    Thanks for your help, Cherry

I’m just curious, the info specifies the 2 posts must be submitted “between Monday the 20th and Friday the 25th”. The problem is the 25th is actually Saturday… Was looking forward to one last day to edit that second post!

  19. Posted August 25, 2012 at 12:51 am | Permalink

I forgot to indicate that my second entry, entitled Great Expectations, was for the contest. Could it still be considered?
